Doctorate of Philosophy

Admission Requirements

In general, the PhD admission requirements listed below are in line with those of the School of Public Health:

A combined verbal and quantitative score of 1300 or greater is preferred on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is required for students whose primary language is not English.  The minimum score required by the school is 600 for the paper/written exam, 250 for the computer-based exam, and 90 for the internet-based exam.

The Department of Tropical Medicine generally require completion of the requirements for a master's degree or 30 graduate-level credits in a field related to the doctoral area of study.  Exceptions are made for outstanding students holding only baccalaureate degrees.  A personal interview is required if the applicant is located in or near New Orleans.

For students with a master's degree, a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale for graduate coursework is preferred.

Written recommendations are required from three or more individuals who are familiar with the applicant's academic and/or professional performance, and in general these recommendations are sought from persons with an earned doctorate and preferably from referees outside Tulane University.

A departmental committee reviews the applications and makes recommendation.  Then the School of Doctoral committee will consider acceptance or rejection.
