FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q1. Is there any course offered by Distance learning (e learning, etc) in relation to Tropical Infectious Diseases? A1. Regarding distance learning options, at present, we offer all our school core public health courses via distance. However, we do not have distance learning option for our tropical medicine courses. Q2. When students are going on-line to try to register for classes, where do they get a PIN number from? A2. They cannot register until they come to orientation. Or, if they are summer students, they need to come to the Office of Admissions. We will have the student sign the Code of Conduct, and then we give them their PIN. Then, they can register. Q3. A) How many credits am I suppose to take per semester? B) How do I estimate my average cost? A3. A) You can find information on cost per credit hour here: http://www.sph.tulane.edu/admissions/tuition.htm B) The # of hours a student takes per semester is up to the student. Full-time status is 9 hours, and financial aid is dependent on whether a student is part-time or full-time. Q4. What is my minimum requirement for GRE? A4. Our average MSPH student has a score of 1150. The SPHTM has a minimum of at least 1000 for Master's program and minimum of at least 1200 for Doctoral program. Q5. What are the other things needed to gain admission for the mph program? A5. The following items are required for admission: a SOPHAS application found at www.sophas.org, GRE scores, official transcripts, 3 letters of recommendation, and a personal statement of goals and objectives. All of these may be sent directly to SOPHAS. Q6. What are the deadlines for application to programs? A6. "The school maintains a rolling admissions policy and accepts qualified applicants during fall, spring, and summer terms on a continual basis until the actual start date of classes. For adequate financial aid and visa processing, it is recommended that applicants submit their application materials to SOPHAS by the following dates: - April 15 for fall enrollment
- October 15 for spring enrollment
- March 15 for summer enrollment and MHA applicants for fall enrollment
Q7. Do you offer scholarships to international students?
A7. We do not offer any scholarships or federal funding to international students. Please refer to international student aid information. Q8. I would like to know if the classes with the suffix 40 are on line classes for the MPH&TM? A8. Yes, classes that are designated as "section 40" as opposed to "section 01" are online courses, and the student can only register for them with the permission of the instructor. Q9. Can I study on a tourist visa? A9. NO. You will need an I-20 (for the F-1 VISA) or a DS-2019 (for the J-1 VISA). To obtain either one of these Visa’s, you must be accepted into the Tulane program and provide original proof that you have the funding for the full tuition for the semester, living expenses and health insurance. Q10. What options are there for on campus housing? A10. Tulane University has one downtown housing option which is Deming Pavilion. You may contact the staff at Deming Pavilion at Deming@tulane.edu or 504-988-6275. This is located within walking distance of the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.
