Course Description The Department of Tropical Medicine offers a two-week summer course in Sierra Leone. The course is designed for MPH students interested in practical experiences in clinical tropical medicine, field research, and public health in a resource-limited setting in sub-Saharan Africa. Activities will include: observing on medical rounds and in clinical and research laboratories participating in ongoing research and field programs participating in didactic and discussion sessions visiting local and international non-governmental organizations involved in primary health care and control programs
To enrich the academic and cultural exchange, students will be paired with Sierra Leonean counter-parts from Kenema’s Eastern Polytechnic Institute. Instruction will be provided by Tulane faculty as well as local staff. Sixty hours may be accredited toward the practicum requirement for tropical medicine students. The course is open to all Masters level students, with priority given to those in the Department of Tropical Medicine. There are no pre-requisites. Click here for access to last year's syllabus. Location Tulane field station in Kenema town, Sierra Leone: - population of Kenema town approximately 300,000 people
- based on the grounds of Kenema Government Hospital (KGH), a 327-bed regional reference center for the southeastern region of the country
- laboratory and field-based research conducted through the Tulane/KGH Research Laboratory located on the hospital grounds
- base of the Mano River Union Lassa Fever Network, a World Health Organization program implemented by Tulane for the prevention and control of Lassa fever in the region
