This is a list of associations that you, as a public health professional, may be interested in joining. Some have employment information at their website, but mainly these are membership-based organizations.
AcademyHealth is the professional home for health services researchers, policy analysts, and practitioners, and a leading, non-partisan resource for the best in health research and policy. AcademyHealth promotes interaction across the health research and policy arenas by bringing together a broad spectrum of players to share their perspectives, learn from each other, and strengthen their working relationships.
American Association for Health Education
AAHE serves health educators and other professionals, encouraging supporting, and assisting health professionals concerned with health promotion through education and other systematic strategies. There is no employment information at this website.
American Association for the Advancement of Science
AAAS publishes the journal Science and other science-related publications, hosts scientific conferences and meetings, helps scientists to advance their careers, and undertakes numerous programs and activities that promote science to the public and monitor issues which affect the scientific community. No jobs page on website.
American College Health Association
ACHA advocates for college and university health. Programs include a National College Health Assessment and consultative services. Provides a job listing that is updated weekly.
American College of Epidemiology
ACE is dedicated to continuing education and public health promotion for epidemiologists. ACE serves the interest of its members through sponsorship of scientific meetings, including its annual meeting, publication of the Annals of Epidemiology, and promotion of educational activities, recognition of outstanding contributions to the field and through advocating for issues pertinent to epidemiology.
American College of Healthcare Executives
ACHE is an international professional society of 30,000 healthcare executives who lead the nation's hospitals, healthcare systems, and other healthcare organizations. Its mission is to advance its members and healthcare management excellence through high ethical standards, pertinent knowledge, and a relevant credentialing program. Members can access the ACHE Employment Service to search for job opportunities, or leave copies of their resumes.
American College of Preventive Medicine
The American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) is the national professional society for physicians committed to disease prevention and health promotion. ACPM's 2,000 members are engaged in preventive medicine practice, teaching and research.
American Diabetes Association
The American Diabetes Association is a nonprofit health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. The webpage has an employment page and also offers volunteer opportunities.
American Dietetic Association
With nearly 70,000 members, the American Dietetic Association is the nation’s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. ADA serves the public by promoting optimal nutrition, health and well-being.
American Health Care Association
The American Health Care Association is a non-profit federation of affiliate state health organizations, together representing more than 11,000 non-profit and for-profit nursing facility, assisted living, developmentally-disabled, and subacute care providers that care for approximately one million elderly and disabled individuals each day.
American Heart Association
The American Heart Association is a national voluntary health agency whose mission is to reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The website has an employment page listing a large number of available jobs around the country.
American Lung Association
The ALA fights all forms of lung disease, with an emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. It runs a number of community and advocacy programs as well as researching issues in environmental health. It has an employment page listing jobs at the head and local offices.
American Industrial Hygiene Association
AIHA is an international association that serves the needs of occupational and environmental health professionals practicing industrial hygiene in industry, government, labor, academic institutions, and independent organizations. AIHA works in conjunction with the American Board of Industrial Hygiene to promote certification of industrial hygienists, and operates a number of laboratory accreditation programs. Members can access CareerAdvantage, an online employment resource and attend the annual Career Fair.
American Public Health Association
APHA is the oldest and largest organization of public health professionals in the world, representing more than 50,000 members from over 50 occupations of public health. Members are drawn from all public health professions and they collaborate on broad issues of personal and environmental health. The annual APHA meeting is a great way to learn about public health research and network with public health professionals. The website hosts a CareerMart, designed to bring job seekers and employers together.
American Statistical Association
The ASA seeks to promote excellence in statistical science application. The association is organized into chapters located all over the US. While not immediately obvious, the ASA does have a Career Center, where information about jobs and internships is available.
Association for Environmental Health and Sciences
The Association for Environmental Health and Sciences (AEHS) was created to facilitate communication and foster cooperation among professionals concerned with the challenge of soil protection and cleanup. The primary benefit of AEHS membership is the linkage it provides among professionals involved in the various aspects of soil protection and cleanup.
Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology
A multi-disciplinary voluntary international organization whose purpose is to influence, support and improve the quality of healthcare through the practice and management of infection control and the application of epidemiology in all health settings.
Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs
This is a U.S.-based association that represents state public health leaders and others working to improve the health of women, children, and youth. The site has a jobs page listing available jobs around the US.
Association of Occupational and Environmental Clinics
AOEC works to identify and report occupational and environmental hazards and encourage the provision of high quality clinical services. This site provides information on the Epidemiologic Intelligence Service training program in environmental health.
Association of Public Health Laboratories
APHL links laboratories together to strengthen the US health system. Among its activities are policy analysis, technical assistance, leadership development, and laboratory training. APHL maintains a career center with information for job seekers and employers.
Association of Reproductive Health Professionals
ARHP and its members provide reproductive health services and education, conduct reproductive health research, and influence reproductive health policy. The organization reaches a broad range of healthcare professionals in the U.S. and abroad with education and information about reproductive health science and practice. This website lists positions available with reproductive health organizations.
Association of Schools of Public Health
This national organization represents the deans, faculty, and students of accredited schools of public health. ASPH assists member schools, works with the federal government to strengthen public health information and education, and assists in achieving national public health goals. The employment page links you to Public Health Jobs.net, a searchable database of jobs.
Association of State and Territorial Health Officials
ASTHO represents the state and territorial health agencies of the United States, with the goal of assisting these agencies in the development and implementation of public health programs. The site provides a list of current openings at state health agencies.
Association for Women's Rights in Development
The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an international membership organization connecting, informing, and mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development, and women's human rights. AWID members are researchers, academics, students, educators, activists, business people, policy-makers, development practitioners, and funders. AWID has a broad network of expert, committed members interested in sharing their ideas towards viable solutions for gender equality.
California Tuberculosis Controllers Association
The California Tuberculosis Controllers Association (CTCA) is an affiliate of the California Conference of Local Health Officers (CCLHO), and is comprised of local health agency officials directly responsible for the control of tuberculosis (TB) in their respective communities. The TB Control Branch of the California Department of Health Services maintains an ongoing close relationship with the CTCA. This site includes local TB employment listings.
Global Health Council
The Global Health Council is the world's largest membership alliance dedicated to saving lives by improving health throughout the world. Members include health-care professionals and organizations working to ensure global health for all. The Council works to ensure that all who strive for improvement and equity in global health have the information and resources they need to succeed. Members can access an online list of available positions. In addition, they receive a discount when registering for the annual conference, an excellent place for networking with international public health professionals.
Health and Science Communications Association
The Health and Science Communications Association is an association of communications professionals committed to sharing knowledge and resources in the health and science arenas. While H&SCA is a membership organization, their website does have job listings that open to the public.
Louisiana Primary Care Association
The Louisiana Primary Care Association’s Community HealthCorps Program was recently awarded funding from the Louisiana Campaign for Tobacco-Free Living to support tobacco prevention and control efforts in East Baton Rouge parish. Through this partnership, LPCA will work with clients at the BREC Senior Center to host the “Breathe Easy: Health and Wellness Series” where local healthcare providers will facilitate discussions about various health topics; specifically, those exacerbated by tobacco usage. LPCA will also motivate senior citizens participating in this project in activities facilitated by the Louisiana Cancer Control Partnership.
Louisiana Public Health Association
The mission of LPHA is to promote health in the State of Louisiana by fostering acquaintances and mutual understanding among persons interested in public health, assisting in the development of better health facilities in the State, keeping abreast of progress in the field of public health, and enhancing the prestige of public health as a career. Membership benefits include opportunities to further professional growth and establish new professional relationships and reduced rates for the annual educational conference and other seminars or conferences sponsored by LPHA.
National Assembly on School-Based Health Care
The National Assembly is a not-for-profit membership association whose mission is to nurture interdisciplinary school-based health care. This site includes job opportunities with state affiliate Assemblies.
National Association of Community Health Care Centers
NACHC represents the interests of community health care centers that provide services to America’s poor and medically underserved. There is no employment page but information is provided about NACHC’s Community HealthCorps, a service program designed to give members exposure to health careers while working in underserved communities.
National Association of County and City Health Officials
The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) is the national nonprofit organization representing local public health agencies (including city, county, metro, district, and Tribal agencies). The site includes job listings both for local health departments and NACCHO headquarters.
National Association of Health Data Organizations
The National Association of Health Data Organizations (NAHDO) is a national, not-for-profit membership organization dedicated to improving health care through the collection, analysis, dissemination, public availability, and use of health data. The website contains a list of job postings (under the members pull-down menu).
National Association of Health Service Executives
The National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) is a non-profit association of Black health care executives that promotes the advancement and development of Black health care leaders, and seeks to elevate the quality of health care services rendered to minority and underserved communities. Job listings are for members only, but discounted student membership rates are offered.
National Association of People Living with AIDS
NAPWA advocates on behalf of people living with HIV/AIDS. The site lists jobs as they become available.
National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems
NAPH represents over 100 hospitals and health systems in the US. Activities include lobbying federal and state lawmakers about the needs and challenges of members. Job opportunities are listed.
National Environmental Health Association
NEHA is a professional society of environmental health practitioners. It offers credentialing programs and technical workshops as well as publishing a peer-review journal and carrying out a number of programs. The website offers information about scholarships and careers in environmental health.
National Forum for Health Care Quality Measurement and Reporting
The National Quality Forum (NQF) is a not-for-profit, nonpartisan, membership-based organization that works to catalyze improvements in healthcare.
National Rural Health Association
The National Rural Health Association (NRHA) is a national nonprofit membership organization with more than 20,000 members. The association's mission is to provide leadership on rural health issues. NRHA membership consists of a diverse collection of individuals and organizations, all of whom share the common bond of an interest in rural health.
National Wellness Institute
The National Wellness Institute is a membership organization for health promotion and wellness professionals. It provides quality education resources and continuing education, promotes opportunities for life-long learning in Health and Wellness, provides new and innovative professional development programs, and serves professionals and organizations that promote health and wellness. Members have access to the searchable online membership directory and job listings.
Society for Public Health Education
The Society for Public Health Education is the only professional organization devoted exclusively to public health education and health promotion. Membership benefits include access to nine networking listservs, a job bank, mentoring program, and scholarships. Student memberships are available.
Society of Toxicology
The Society of Toxicology is a professional and scholarly organization of scientists from academic institutions, government, and industry representing the great variety of scientists who practice toxicology in the U.S. and abroad. The Society promotes the acquisition and utilization of knowledge in toxicology, aids in the protection of public health, and facilitates disciplines. The Society has a strong commitment to education in toxicology and to the recruitment of students and new members into the profession.
