Tulane Interdisciplinary Experience Seminars (TIDES) Course in Global Health
The Tulane Interdisciplinary Experience Seminars Program (TIDES) is a distinctive seminar program for all first-year students at Tulane. TIDES are designed to provide quality interactions with some of Tulane's finest faculty, active learning, intellectual challenges, social co-curricular activities, and the opportunity to meet fellow students with similar interests. Participation in a TIDES course is mandatory for all incoming freshmen to provide them with the opportunity to explore an academic topic with an interdisciplinary approach.
A TIDES course in global health has been created to stimulate interest in this topic among entering students, who can then enroll in the bachelor of science in public health (BSPH) program, if interested.
TIDES 126-01 - People, Places and Change: Global Health and Southern Louisiana
This course introduces students to critical global health issues and concepts in the context of southern Louisiana. Specifically, we will compare and contrast health challenges facing urban and rural coastal communities in the developing world and in the region. From the Crescent City's early health challenges to the consequences of recent hurricanes, southern Louisiana provides a unique setting in which to examine international health and development. We will utilize movies, online presentations, podcasts and interactive websites to travel the world virtually and introduce new global health topics and concepts. Through multiple field trips and guest lectures, we will explore these topics further in the region's unique environment and communities. This course is for any student interested in examining the health issues facing the developing world and especially those students eager to discover New Orleans and gain a better understanding of the health issues facing the city and southern Louisiana.
