 Peru Immersion Workshop

Annual Immersion Workshop in Lima, Peru

The Office of Global Health hosts an annual three-day immersion workshop in Lima, Peru for faculty and doctoral students (if space permits) interested in globalizing their activities.  The workshop provides participants with information on conducting global health research and is specifically tailored to the research interests of those participants selected to attend each year.

Currently, there are multiple NIH-funded training grants and several large NIH and Wellcome Trust-funded research projects in Peru; as a result, the workshop includes a combination of presentations and site visits to various research project locations during the three-day event.

To ensure the hands-on nature of the workshop, attendance is limited to 30 people, to include up to ten Tulane faculty and/or doctoral students, who are provided with full travel and lodging funds in order to attend the workshop.  Participants from collaborating institutions in Peru, as well as colleagues from other FGH international collaborating institutions, are also invited to attend.

Topics may include:

  • Setting up successful collaborative research projects overseas.
  • Challenges in finding funding for overseas research.
  • Field visits to research sites, such as the Pampas Research Station, to learn about the complexities of managing and running this station in the middle of a shantytown.
  • Interdisciplinary collaborations in global health, including the strengths and challenges.
  • Ethics issues in global health research.
