Training in Global Reproductive Epidemiology (TIGRE)
The main objective of this NIH funded grant is to provide pre-doctoral training in the field of reproductive, perinatal and pediatric epidemiologic research to address global health issues. Global Health issues are defined as health issues relevant to the United States and the rest of the world (Institute of Medicine, 1997). Epidemiologic research is defined as including both observational and experimental methods (i.e., including randomized controlled trials).
The TIGRE program will train nine pre-doctoral students to conduct research in Maternal and Child Health epidemiology. Trainees will develop strong skills in:
- The current state of knowledge and major problems in reproductive, perinatal, and pediatric epidemiology.
- Observational and experimental study design, analysis, and interpretation.
- Collaboration with international and interdisciplinary teams.
- Pragmatics and logistics of conducting research in the United States and internationally.
- Presentation and dissemination of research findings.
A secondary objective of this program is to raise the profile of reproductive epidemiology overall. We anticipate that by training this group of students to focus on reproductive health, to include presenting their research with faculty at seminars and conferences, knowledge and awareness of reproductive epidemiology will be increased among students and researchers in other areas.
