BSPH/MPH or MSPH Joint Degree Program
The BSPH/MPH Joint Degree program allows outstanding BSPH students to link their studies with the Master of Public Health (MPH), the Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH), Master of Health Administration (MHA)) degrees. The joint degree program allows for BSPH students to take up to 15 credits of graduate course work while an undergraduate that may be applied to both the BSPH and MPH (or MSPH or MHA) degrees. This results in a time saving of approximately 1 semester of course work toward the master’s degree. The MSPH, MHA (60 credits) and MPH degree offerings at SPHTM require 45 credit hours of graduate coursework.
The guidelines below describe the combined degree program for the 2012-2013 academic year.
BSPH - Years 1 to 4: Minimum total of 120 credit hours and completion of BSPH requirements. Students who are majors in the BSPH program are eligible to apply to the combined degree program. Acceptance to the combined degree program is not automatic and students must apply to and be accepted into the MPH, MSPH or MHA program. Students should apply for the joint degree program during the spring semester of Year 3 and complete their application no later than March 15th of their junior year. Please note that this is an earlier application date then previously. While students may apply to the MPH program separately, they will not be able to use the same15 credits toward both degrees.
Students accepted into the combined BSPH/MPH program may use up to 15 credits graduate public health credits to both degrees. The SPHTM core courses (GEHS, GCHB, GHSD, EPID, & BIOS 6030) are required courses for the BSPH degree. Students must complete all BSPH requirements and graduate from the BSPH program before moving onto enrollment in the MPH (MSPH OR MHA) program. SPHTM has rolling admissions into the graduate programs, so students who complete the BSPH graduation requirements in the fall of their senior year, may proceed onto the MPH or MSPH in the spring semester. (MHA only accepts in the fall
MPH or MSPH study: The MPH and MSPH degrees require a minimum of 45 credits graduate level work, including the public health core courses. Students in the combined degree program may begin study in one of the graduate public health degrees with up to 15 graduate credits and will need to complete at least an additional 33 credits to meet the requirements for 45 credits for the MPH or MSPH degree; they must also complete a practicum and culminating experience. The MHA requires a total 60 credits and requires an internship and culminating experience.
To be eligible for admission into the MPH or MSPH program, students must have a 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA) and have score in the upper percentiles of the GRE exam.
Students in the joint program may earn up to 15 credits toward the MPH or MSPH degree. By completing an equivalent of 1 semester of graduate course work, joint degree students may be able to complete graduate study in approximately 1½ calendar years (including a summer), depending on the course load, and timing of the practicum and culminating experience requirements. This is in comparison with the 2 to 2½ years needed to complete the MPH for those not in the joint degree program. Students are not required to finish their MPH in an accelerated time as tuition is calculated by credit hour rather than by semester. Students should work closely with their advisors to keep on track.
