The Louisiana Association of Health Plans (LAHP) has awarded a $10,000 scholarship to a Tulane student who not only is studying healthcare management, but also has already taken steps towards becoming a future healthcare leader.

Michael Brown, a graduate student in the Department of Health Systems Management, received the LAHP Graduate Student Scholarship in Healthcare Management last month at the LAHP 2007 Annual Meeting and Recognition Dinner in New Orleans. The award will be applied to the cost of his graduate-level education as he works toward a career in hospital administration.

Brown said it is a great honor to have received the award and that it will be a big help to him as he enters the final stages of his education. “Receiving the scholarship was an excellent exclamation point on what’s been an exciting year for me,” he said, adding that he also just accepted a postgraduate fellowship at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Brown, who initiated and organized the November 2007 New Orleans Healthcare Symposium, said his ultimate goal is to become the CEO of a major health system or facility. “I would use my education and experience to employ modern healthcare management systems to create a facility with the resources, technology, and community support to attract and retain top medical professionals,” he said. Brown hopes that the fellowship at M.D. Anderson will be a logical next step in taking his classroom studies to the practical setting.

“We are pleased to award the 2008 graduate student scholarship to Michael Brown,” said LAHP Scholarship Committee chair and board member Patrick Bicknell. “Although the committee had several strong candidates from which to choose, we believe that Michael was outstanding.” Offered annually, the LAHP graduate student scholarship is designated for students enrolled in their final year of a graduate healthcare management program.

“Michael already has demonstrated strong promise of leadership in the healthcare profession and has combined that with significant community involvement,” Bicknell said. “We are pleased to be able to provide this $10,000 scholarship to help him in his studies and wish him the best of luck as he begins his healthcare management career."

LAHP is the state trade association for the health benefits industry. Founded in 1991, LAHP has a broad-based membership that includes insurers and other companies providing health benefits, along with organizations that embrace the idea of quality, affordable health care.
