Mark James, vice chair of tropical medicine, is among 18 professors nominated for this year's Award for Teaching Excellence granted by the Association of Schools of Public Health and Pfizer's Public Health Group.This is the second year that ASPH and Pfizer's Group have nominated instructors in public health for outstanding teaching. The award honors faculty of top public health institutions "who embody the finest qualities of a public health professor and who serve as mentors to public health leaders of tomorrow." According to Stephen Shortell, chair of the ASPH Education Committee, "This is an important award that acknowledges the vital role of teaching and mentoring in the development of the public health workforce." James' devotion to his profession is also recognized by his students. Olivia Almendares said that James was one of the reasons she chose to attend Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. "Mark James was extremely helpful in answering my questions about the tropical medicine program," said Almendares. "Since my arrival, he has been actively helping me pursue my research interest in infectious diseases in Latin America."
James has also earned the Teaching Excellence Award at Tulane University in 2005, 1998, 1997, 1996, and 1990. He also earned the Chancellor's Teaching Scholar Award in 1999. |  | |
