Environmental Health Sciences

Goal:
The Department of Environmental Health Sciences strives to equip students with the knowledge and skills to accomplish the following: 1) Apply scientific principles in toxicology, industrial hygiene, policy, and oncology to prevent, detect, and mitigate environmental public health problems and threats locally and globally; 2) Conduct research for innovative solutions to environmental health issues; and 3) Investigate and monitor environmental hazards and community health status.  Use this link to visit the Environmental Health Sciences Department's web pages.

Career paths of graduates:
Environmental medicine; occupational medicine; clinical research, including environmental oncology and genetic toxicology; preventive medicine, environmental public health; occupational health; aerospace medicine; and environmental policy.

Environmental Health Sciences Degree Requirements
MD/MPH combined degree students pursuing an MPH in environmental health sciences complete the following requirements:

  • School of Medicine coursework
  • Required SPHTM coursework
  • Practicum (fulfilled, in part, by the MD/MPH rotation)
  • Culminating experience

Required SPHTM coursework, including the following:

  • Core Courses
  • Programmatic Courses
    Programmatic course requirements differ by track within the ENHS Department.  Consult with your advisor to choose appropriate programmatic courses and electives.
  • Elective Courses
    You must complete enough elective public helath courses to meet your graduating class's minimum required hours.  Meet with your advisor to choose appropriate electives.
  • Practicum
    The practicum requirement is fulfilled, in part, by the MD/MPH rotation.  Please refer to the
    MD/MPH Rotation Requirement.
  • Culminating Experience
    Please meet with your advisor about culminating experience options in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences.
