Biostatistics

Goal:
To acquire a broad range of data analytic skills, including principles of statistical inference, methods of data description and analysis, and database management. Prepares candidates for research in medical sciences and better understanding of the literature.  Use this link to visit the Biostatistics Department's web pages.

Career paths of graduates:
Academic medicine, clinical research, consultant to managed care and other organizations.

Biostatistics Degree Requirements
MD/MPH Combined Degree students pursuing an MSPH in Biostatistics complete the following requirements:

  • School of Medicine coursework
  • Required SPHTM coursework
  • Practicum (fulfilled, in part, by the MD/MPH rotation)
  • Culminating experience

Required SPHTM coursework, including the following:

    1. BIOS 6040 Intermediate Biostatistics 3 hrs
    2. BIOS 7060 Regression Analysis 3 hrs
    3. BIOS 7080 Design of Experiments 3 hrs
    4. BIOS 7150 Categorical Data Analysis 3 hrs
    5. BIOS 7300 Statistical Methods for Survival Data Analysis 3 hrs
    or
    BIOS 7400 Clinical Trials 3 hrs
  • Suggested Elective Courses
    1. BIOS 6220 Database Management in the Health Sciences 3 hrs
    2. BIOS 7250 Principles of Sampling 3 hrs

  • Practicum
    The practicum requirement is fulfilled, in part, by the MD/MPH rotation.  Please refer to the MD/MPH Rotation Requirement.
  • Culminating Experience
    Please meet with your advisor about culminating experience options for the Department of Biostatistics.

    In general, before being eligible to begin a culminating experience, a student should have completed at least six hours from the following courses:
