Overview and Eligibility

All full-time Tulane students are eligible to be seen in the listed clinics at the Student Health Center. Part-time and dissertation students need to pay a Health Center fee to be eligible. Students at the School of Medicine and School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine can receive primary medical care at either the Uptown or Downtown Student Health Center.

Full-time students have already prepaid their Student Health Center (Uptown) fee at the time of registration, so primary care services are provided with no further charge. Fees are charged for laboratory tests, pharmacy purchases, orthopedic appliances, immunizations, Travel Clinic, and consultant gynecological services, but these can either be billed directly to your student account or paid by check, cash, or credit card. Many of these expenses are covered by your medical insurance plan.

Downtown
Tulane Public Health Students and Tulane Medical Students can use the downtown student health center, conveniently located on the second floor of the Elk Place Building, 127 Elk Place, Room 261, adjacent to the Saratoga Garage. You may view a map here.

Health Insurance Information

The University requires that all full-time students carry adequate medical insurance while attending Tulane University.  This requirement must be met each year during the Fall Semester by either enrolling in the university-sponsored Student Medical Insurance Plan or declining the coverage by completing the on-line waiver form.

It is your decision to either enroll or waive the Student Medical Insurance Plan.  You must inform the University of your decision by September 21, 2007.  Failure to complete the on-line waiver form will result in the student’s automatic enrollment in the Student Medical Insurance Plan.  Part-time, dissertation, executive program students and previously enrolled dependents are not automatically enrolled.

See additional information regarding Tulane's insurance information here.

Immunization Information

The State of Louisiana requires all students entering a college in the State for the first time to have either received the following immunizations or sign a personal exemption in which case the State will bar the student from the campus in case of an epidemic for which the student has not been immunized.

MEASLES, MUMPS, RUBELLA requirement: Two (2) doses of live vaccine. The vaccine must have been given on or after the first birthday.  A second dose of measles vaccine must meet the same requirement, but should not have been given within 30 days of the first dose.

TETANUS-DIPHTHERIA requirement: A booster dose of tetanus-diphtheria vaccine given within the past ten (10) years. Students can generally be considered to have completed a primary series earlier in life.

MENINGOCOCCAL Vaccine requirement: Immunization against meningococcal disease is now a Tulane University requirement for all students living on-campus in residence halls.  ACIP now recommends that medical professionals, as well as, college and universities educate parents and students, particularly freshman living in dorms, about the disease, the potential benefits of vaccination and provide access to the vaccine for those who wish to reduce their risk of disease.

Tuberculosis (Mantoux) Skin Test: (Not required by law for college entrance) It is recommended that students coming from areas of high tuberculosis transmission (such as Central and South America, Asia and Pacific Islands, Sub-Saharan Africa, Peoples Republic of China, Korea, Philippines, Vietnam, India, Haiti and Mexico) have a tuberculosis (Mantoux) skin test within the 12 months prior to registration at Tulane. (Tine test is not acceptable.)  The test is read in millimeters of induration, perpendicular to the long axis of the forearm.  If the TB test was positive, results of Chest X-ray and a description of the treatment should be submitted on physician’s letterhead along with the Proof of Immunization Form.  All correspondence must be in English.

Hepatitis B Vaccine: (Not required by law for college entrance) series of (3) doses, given at 0, 1 month and 6 months, prior to college entry.  Partial vaccination should be noted on the Tulane Proof of Immunization Form (Part III).

The Student Health Center (Uptown) can offer all of the previously mentioned immunizations. Other immunizations which are not required by the State are available at the Student Health Center (Uptown), such as chicken pox, hepatitis A and B, and influenza. Tuberculosis screening (PPD test) is offered at any time.
