INTERNSHIPS: Alliance For Health
The alliance provides unbiased information to elected officials and their staffs, journalists, policy analysts and advocates. Interns have a variety of responsibilities including: research, health policy analysis, media list compilation, administrative duties, and web page updates. Interns also attend events and forums on Capitol Hill and in the D.C. area.
American Cancer Society
The purpose of the summer internship program is to develop public awareness of the American Cancer Society. Interns will assist in establishing a network in communities to provide community outreach programs. Internships are offered with stipend and throughout various locations in the country. Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program
The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program brings talented college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, D.C., where they are placed in congressional offices and learn about health policy issues, with a focus on issues affecting racial and ethnic minority and underserved communities. Through the nine-week program, Scholars gain knowledge about federal legislative procedure and health policy issues, while further developing their critical thinking and leadership skills. In addition to gaining experience in a congressional office, Scholars participate in seminars and site visits to augment their knowledge of health care issues, and write and present a health policy research memo that addresses a problem of concern to disadvantaged populations. The program completely covers living costs, airfare to/from Washington, DC and provides a stipend upon completion.
Bread for the World
Intern positions are available in the following departments: Administration, Church Relations, Communications, Development and Member Services, Government Relations, Organizing and the Bread for the World Institute. Carter Center
The Carter Centers offers unique and diverse opportunities for students who are interested in contemporary international and domestic issues. This is a 10-week summer internship for undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Studies, or related fields who are passionate about the environment, about human health, and about the link between the two. Interns will participate in environmental health projects, interact with federal officials and scientists, and visit important environmental health sites in Atlanta. Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) - HIVCorps Internship Program
IDRZ's work includes research, training, and service delivery in the areas of HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, and maternal-child health. They monitor the development and implementation of federal and state policies and provide information, technical assistance, and support to networks of state and local child advocates, service providers, and public and private sector officials and leaders. Throughout the year, CDF's headquarters in Washington, D.C. offers a wide range of unpaid internships to provide an opportunity for students and recent graduates to receive academic credit and valuable work experience in the nonprofit/public interest sector. Connect-123
Connect-123 facilitates career-related internship and service learning opportunities for international undergraduate and graduate students in Cape Town in a wide range of fields including public health and education. Past internship projects have included working with disadvantaged children and their parents on health-related issues, including safety, sexuality, and basic hygiene. Roles have included training, mentoring, and assisting local non-profits with overall program development. For all programs, Connect-123 provides substantial local support, including relatively high-end, secure housing, logistics support, and regular social programs (ranging from cultural tours to community service activities). They also advise program participants prior to departure and provide ongoing support and guidance once in Cape Town, from academic advice and mentoring to hands-on help in case of an emergency. To date, they've worked with students from over 180 universities and expect to have over 250 students from 20 countries participating on programs during 2009. They have also formed successful partnerships with several US-based universities and can develop customized programs in Cape Town and Buenos Aires around specific requirements. This is an internship available with the City of New Orleans. Interns will aid and essentially become Health Department inspectors identifying environmental health hazards such as high lead levels as well as rat and mosquito infestations. The Health Research Training Program (HRTP) of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provides undergraduate, graduate/professional school students the opportunity to experience some of the "real life" challenges of public health. The program offers internships in public health research, community outreach and education, fieldwork, and policy. Most students work full-time for 10-12 weeks during the summer, and part-time during the academic year. Financial stipends are available on a limited basis. This 10 week program lasts from early June to mid August and consists of a combination of weekly lectures and laboratory work with faculty from the Immunology Graduate Program, with extensive interactions with graduate students and postdoctoral fellows as well. The intention is to provide an exposure to current topics in Immunology to undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing graduate school. Selection criteria incldue undergraduate background, interest in studying life sciences at the graduate level, and letters of reference. Interns work with professional scientists from the Hepatitis B Foundation and its research affiliate, the Institute for Hepatitis and Virus Research and the Drexel Institute of Drexel College of Medicine. Applicants to the Hispanic National Internship Program are undergraduate and graduate students with a minimum 3.0 GPA who are active in community and campus activities. HACU staff matches academic backgrounds to internship descriptions provided by the host organizations. Interns work in the Washington, D.C., area and at field sites throughout the country. Mount Sinai International Exchange Program for Minority Students
The Mount Sinai International Exchange Program for Minority Students invites recent minority graduates and current undergraduate and graduate minority students to participate in an exciting and unique international exchange program. Interns are given the opportunity to conduct community-based research under the guidance of a prominent international scientist in one of six countries. Interns will see their research skills strengthened and their cultural and linguistic abilities validated, and will experience and contribute to an international scientific collaboration. The National Council
The National Council is a not-for-profit association of 1,300 behavioral healthcare organizations that provide treatment and rehabilitation for mental illnesses and addictions disorders to nearly six million adults, children and families in communities across the country. Policy Interns at the National Council gain substantive experience in state and federal policy on issues affecting adults and children with mental disabilities and the organizations that provide them community-based mental health and substance abuse treatment. Interns should have strong analytical, research and computer skills, including the ability to effectively use the internet. Public Health Education Internships in Ecuador
Internships in less-developed regions of Latin America offer a unique opportunity to understand health actual problems and their interaction with the complex social realities, as well as to contribute and to help sound efforts in health promotion and education offered by governmental and non-governmental institutions. Additionally it is a good chance to improve Spanish fluency in a full-immersion experience, and finally it is a great occasion to help in several ways impoverished groups in the Quito region.
Public Health Apprentice Program (PHAP) - Texas
PHAP is a three-year CDC fellowship program, in collaboration with McKing Consulting Corporation, and in partnership with public health agencies in Texas, that provides training and work experience in diverse public health programs such as chronic disease, environmental health, immunizations, STDs, and TB. Apprentices may be expected to perform the following job functions: patient/client interaction to elicit or provide information; investigation of public health problems and issues; data collection, analysis, and reporting; surveillance activities; public health education; home visits; community involvement/partnership; and liasion of public health responsiblities with other public or private providers or partners. A national site that is not public health specific but does have a wide variety of categories relevant to public health. For example: health care, hospital administration, environmental health and behavioral science to name a few. Although not all areas have multiple internships posted, this site is worth keeping an eye on. If nothing else it is creatively designed and visually pleasing.

Sojourner Truth Community Center
STCC is located in the Treme Area of New Orleans. The community center was re-opened in January of 2009, and is staffed by Catholic Charities. Prior to Hurricane Katrina, the STCC was operated by residents of the Lafitte Housing Development. The Lafitte site is now in the process of being redeveloped. STCC is charged with serving former Lafitte Housing Development, Treme and Tulane/Gravier residents. We offer programming/training in the areas of: youth enhancement, health & wellness, wealth development, basic needs and stabilization. Currently we are in partnership with Tulane Community Health Center at Covenant House. STCC has been adopting their monthly health foci, which has produced some great health campaigns. In an effort to further develop our health & wellness program, we are hoping to obtain students that would be interested in assisting with the implementation of our community center’s health & wellness model (community outreach, preparing health presentations, assisting with general health & wellness activities). The State Department is responsible for formulating, implementing and supporting U.S. foreign policy. The department manages several student employment programs for students to get experience in a foreign affairs environment through first-hand knowledge. Some students work in Washington, D.C., and others have the opportunity to work at an embassy overseas. Positions are both paid and unpaid and many are available during spring, summer or fall. The Pedro Zamora Public Policy Fellowship is an excellent opportunity for young professionals, undergraduate and graduate students who seek experience in HIV related public policy and government affairs. American India Foundation Service Corps Fellowship
The Service Corps Fellowship sends Americans to work with NGOs in India for a period of ten months, from September to June each year. The program aims to build the capacity of Indian NGOs while developing American leaders with an understanding of India. AIF provides a range of support to fellows, including training, technical support, on-going supervision, a stipend, supplemental health insurance, and travel to and from India. The Kaiser Family Foundation offers this program in memory of former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. For nine weeks, Scholars live and work at congressional offices in Washington, DC, learning about legislative procedure and health policy issues. The program is based at Howard University. Racial and ethnic minorities who are recent college graduates are eligible to apply. Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowships for Graduate Study
Fellowship candidates must have an outstanding undergraduate record, demonstrate financial need and be attending a designated college or university. The program of study need not be limited to Armenian studies, and candidates can be of any national descent. Applications must be submitted through the dean of the university where the student is pursuing graduate studies. In the case of undergraduate liberal arts colleges, students in their senior year are eligible to apply for a fellowship to fund their future graduate work. The NNEMS program is a comprehensive fellowship program that provides undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to participate in a fellowship project that is directly related to their field of study. The NNEMS program is sponsored by EPA's Environmental Education Division (EED), Office of Children's Health Protection and Environmental Education (OCHPEE). Students who are awarded NNEMS fellowships are offered a unique opportunity to gain research and training experience directly linked to their undergraduate or graduate studies. Ford Foundation International Fellowships Program applicants must be resident nationals or residents of an eligible IFP country or territory. IFP selects Fellows on the strength of their clearly-stated intention to serve their communities and countries of origin, and expects that they will honor this obligation. The fellowship is designed for those intending to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree and lists on its website the range of academic areas which grants are offered in.
Fulbright Fellowship Program for U.S. Students
The Fulbright Fellowship program provides opportunities for graduating seniors and students pursuing a Master's of PhD to live abroad while pursuing a research project designed by the student. Students can apply for placement in over 140 countries worldwide and grants are available in all fields of study. Fulbright also has a separate program sponsoring non-U.S. citizens to study in the U.S. for graduate school.
Greenlining Institute Fellows Program
The fellowship is a year long program for young leaders that have completed, at minimum, their undergraduate degrees by the start of the program. Fellows are assigned to specific program areas and develop expertise with the direction of a Program Manager and the Academy Director. Fellows receive intensive training for policy work at the highest level.
Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Post-Bachelor Fellowship
The IHME, located at University of Washington, offers a fellowship for recent college graduates with strong quantitative skills to train with faculty and senior researchers on a variety of global heath projects. The PBF program combines advanced on-the-job training and mentoring, and provides the option of pursuing a fully-funded Master of Public Health (MPH) degree.
International Fellows Program
The International Fellows Program (IFP) is a nine-month internship targeting talented recent college graduates and graduate students in an effort to provide on-the-job development experience at community project sites in Africa. The Fellows provide technical assistance and training to community-based grassroots projects in various areas such as education, public health, HIV/AIDS, English as a Second Language (ESL), agricultural development, proposal development, managerial training, feasibility studies, and small business enterprise development. The Mayoral Fellows Program is a ten-month program gives fellows an opportunity to explore a career in city government while working on specific projects and proposals to help departments reach their goals. Fellows are placed in one of the major divisions, agencies or branches of city government for the first half of the year, and then transferred to a second to ensure a more varied experience. Senior fellows will have the option of remaining in a placement appropriate to his or her field. MARC U-STAR awards provide support for students underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences to improve their preparation for high-caliber graduate training at the Ph.D. level. The program also supports efforts to strengthen the science course curricula, pedagogical skills of faculty, and biomedical research training at institutions with significant enrollments of students from underrepresented groups. These fellowships support up to two years of graduate study in the US for New Americans. New Americans are either resident aliens, naturalized US citizens, or children of two parents who are both US citizens. Fellows receive tuition and maintenance grants. Students may apply as undergraduate seniors intending to continue with graduate study or as graduate students.
University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation Post-Bachelor Fellowship
Provides a unique opportunity for recent college graduates with strong quantitative skills to train with faculty and senior researchers on a variety of global heath projects. The PBF program combines advanced on-the-job training and mentoring, and provides the option of pursuing a fully-funded Master of Public Health (MPH) degree. Each PBF is involved in one or two of our areas of work. PBFs contribute to all aspects of research projects, including building statistical models, writing statistical code, analyzing large datasets, and preparing presentations for conferences and manuscripts for publication.

The U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps is an elite team of more than 6,000 well-trained, highly qualified public health professionals dedicated to delivering the Nation's public health promotion and disease prevention programs and advancing public health science. Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice
The Wellstone Fellowship for Social Justice is designed to foster the advancement of social justice through participation in health care advocacy work that focuses on the unique challenges facing many communities of color. Fellows are based in the Families USA office in Washington, D.C. and learn about Medicare, Medicaid, efforts to achieve universal coverage, and other important health policy issues. Youth Service Opportunities Project (YSOP) Fellows Program
The YSOP Fellows Program continues YSOP's mission of engaging young people in direct service, while encouraging their development as the future leaders of non-profit organizations. The program is a year-long internship for recent graduates. YSOP Fellows are involved with every aspect of our organization. The YSOP Fellows Program requires a one-year commitment. YSOP offers Fellows $15,000 as a Living Allowance, $76/month for commutation and other travel expenses, and participation in YSOP’s medical insurance plan. YSOP Fellows receive 10 days of vacation and 10 days of medical or personal leave. Upon completion of 1,700 hours of service, YSOP Fellows may be eligible to receive a $4,725 AmeriCorps Education Award from the Corporation of National and Community Service and enrollment may also permit them to defer payment of outstanding student loans for the duration of their YSOP service. AAHPERD awards scholarships to outstanding undergraduates and graduates in health education. Applicants must be a member of the organization or must apply for membership at the time of application. See their website for the full list of scholarships and individual requirements for each.
Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarships for Graduate Study
Each award covers a portion of educational expenses, including tuition, living expenses, required fees, and books for the graduate degree chosen. The amount and duration of awards vary by student based on the cost of attendance and the length of the graduate program as well as other scholarships or grants received. The maximum available per student per year of study is $50,000 and the maximum length is six years. Interested students should contact the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Faculty Representative at their undergraduate institution (at Tulane, this is Dr. F. Thomas Luongo).
J.W. Saxe Memorial Prize for Public Service
A prize of two thousand dollars will be awarded to one or more college or university students involved in public service. The award is meant to enable the student to gain practical experience in public service by taking a no-pay or low-pay job or internship during a summer or other term. Preference will be given applicants who have already found such a position, but who require additional funds.
Louisiana Public Health Association (LPHA) Scholarships
The Louisiana Public Health Association will annually award at least one scholarship. The Scholarship Recipient will be presented with the award at the Annual Awards Banquet held during the LPHA Annual Conference in the Spring of each year. National Institutes of Health Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program offers scholarship support, paid research training at the NIH during the summer, and paid employment and training at the NIH after graduation.
New Orleans Chapter of Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays Scholarship Fund
The purpose of the scholarship fund is to recognize outstanding gay and lesbian youth from the community, encourage continuting education for self-identified lesbian and gay youth, and foster a positive imge of gay and lesbian young people in society. Any Louisiana resident applying to attend or currently attending a post-secondary educational institution that is lesbian or gay is encouraged to apply. HealthCorps
Health Corps, a comprehensive health education program, founded and developed by heart surgeon and bestselling author Mehmet Oz, is seeking dynamic, proactive, and engaging individuals to teach its school curriculum and coordinate community health education events. Coordinators will be a part of a national initiative launched in response to a drastic decline in the health of our nation. Based upon a “Peace Corps” model of employment, Coordinators serve two years in a designated high school and community.
