VIRTUAL NETWORKING:  Career Services Gets LinkedIn!
Did you know that 45% of employers use social networking sites to research job candidates?Have you ever tried to search your name in the web and see what comes up? Would it represent you professionally? LinkedIn is the answer! LinkedIn is a virtual professional social network that “links” college students, entry-level and experienced professionals, and other organizations together.
LinkedIn facts: - LinkedIn has over 45 million members in over 200 countries and territories around the world.
- Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are LinkedIn members.
- A new member joins LinkedIn approximately every second, and about half of all members are outside the U.S.
- LinkedIn provides a personalized page where it highlights the professional’s accomplishments and expertise.
This past summer, Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine’s Career Services created a new LinkedIn group to connect Tulane Public Health alumni and other Public Health professionals to the Tulane Graduate and Undergraduate Public Health students. The goal for our students is to show alternative ways to network by giving them the edge and the opportunity to broaden the students’ career resources.

Alumni Profile: James E. Leemann, Ph.D. After graduating with a Master of Science in Hygiene from the SPHTM in 1972, Jim moved to Buffalo, NY to become an industrial hygienist providing consulting services to western New York industries. After surviving the worst winter on record to date, he returned to New Orleans to earn a Master of Engineering in 1974 with an emphasis in environmental engineering from Tulane’s Civil Engineering Department.
Jim’s career has included working for such companies as Dravo, Conoco and DuPont in the safety, occupational health, and environmental fields at technical professional and managerial levels. He retired from DuPont in 1998 to open The Leemann Group LLC, a consulting firm providing services in safety, health, and environment strategic planning. In 1999, he received his Ph.D. in Systemic Management and expanded his consultancy to include business plan development, systemic change management, and behavioral competency science. His clients have included such organizations as DuPont, BP, Greenheck Fan Corporation, and the National Institute for Standards and Technology. Jim's diverse career has taken him full cycle back to Tulane since he accepted a clinical assistant professor appointment to Tulane’s Center for Applied Environmental Public Health at SPHTM in 2002. He currently teaches Occupational Health and Safety Management, makes numerous presentations, has published a number of articles in his fields of interests, and writes a monthly column under the byline Systems Thinking for the Industrial Safety and Health News Magazine.
With 35 years of experience in EHS, Jim can offer valuable perspectives on these careers to students. One such tip is for recent graduates to pursue certifications in their specialties as a boost to gain employment. Always interested in sharing knowledge, Jim is one of the first group of alumni who joined the new SPHTM LinkedIn group for networking! Look for him online! |
