Looking for an Internship? Internships are short-term employment positions, usually from three to six months, paid or unpaid, undertaken during students’ programs of study. At the Tulane School of Public Health, the majority of students are required to complete practical experiences related to their fields prior to graduation. The student’s faculty advisor must approve the student’s selection. The following are some tips on how to find an internship: - Network! Talk to your faculty advisor, professors, alumni and other students for suggestions and leads.
- Resources at Career Services:
- Join the Tulane SPHJOBS-L listserve to receive current opportunity announcements. E-mail kball@tulane.edu for instructions to subscribe. - Search the internship board and internship binders at the Career Services Library in Tidewater 2461. - Visit the Tulane SPHTM Career Services website. Here you’ll find internet resources with over 75 established internship programs. - LA Office of Public Health: Tulane has a local internship and work study partnership program with the LA-OPH. Contact Dr. Maya Begalieva at mbegali@tulane.edu or 504-988-2673.
- PH Employment Databases
Some helpful internet sites for searching internships include: - Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) www.publichealthjobs.net - American Public Health Association (APHA) www.apha.org - Emory SPH’s Public Health Employment Connection cfusion.sph.emory.edu/PHEC/phec.cfm
Some employers offer internships annually. Some on an as-needed basis. Remember, even if an employer does not have an internship advertised, but is a strong match for your interests, you may still contact the organization by phone or email to inquire if they would be willing to have you assist in their program as an intern. Remember to be proactive!
Alumni Profile: Crystal Dreisbach You may have met alumnus Crystal Dreisbach at the Family Health International (FHI) booth at the Tulane & Loyola Fall 2007 Career Fair last month. As a Peace Corps Health Volunteer in Gabon, Crystal was inspired to pursue a Masters in Public Health by a medical officer who was a former Tulane Humphrey Fellow from Cameroon. Crystal graduated in 2005 with an MPH from the Department of International Health and Development with a concentration in Programs, Policies, and Management. For her practical experience—then called Capstone—Crystal proactively contacted organizations with projects she found interesting in Southeast Asia. In Summer 2005, she worked with UNESCO's Asia office in the Adolescent Reproductive Health Unit and also with a small local sustainable development NGO in neighboring Vietnam on HIV prevention efforts in rural communities. Faced with Katrina upon her return to New Orleans, Crystal evacuated to Johns Hopkins University to complete her MPH degree. In her last semester, Crystal applied to FHI in Durham, North Carolina, and started her career there with a Monitoring and Evaluation position. Today, Crystal is a Senior Research Assistant working on a pioneering HIV prevention study which will determine the effectiveness of a pre-exposure prophylaxis (PreP) drug. As part of the job, Crystal will have the opportunity to travel to clinical monitoring study sites in several African countries. Tulane SPHTM alumni are some of the most frequent highest hires at FHI. Crystal says this is because FHI is very pleased with the quality of Tulane graduates. FHI has many internship and employment opportunities available. Interested candidates should register on FHI’s Global Staffing Database at: www.fhi.org/en/AboutFHI/Employment/index.htm |
