SPECIAL POINT OF INTEREST

The APHA Conference in Boston in November was a great networking success for Tulane with many students, faculty, staff and alumni in attendance.

The Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) held their annual meeting for the Career Services Council at that time, and reported another great success. The schools had collaborated and launched a jobs, fellowships and internships database for public health opportunities in 2003.  The site now averages over 15,000 hits per day!

The database allows for searching by geographic region, field and job title.  Searchers can also register to receive listings by email.

Make sure to visit www.publichealthjobs.net to see what's happening in public health!

Global Health Fellows Program Partnering with Tulane

The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP) is a five year cooperative agreement implemented and managed by the Public Health Institute (PHI) in partnership with Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, Harvard School of Public Health, Management Systems International, United Negro College Fund, and University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine.

GHFP is supported by USAID and its goal is to improve the effectiveness of USAID programs by developing and increasing the capacity of health professionals in Washington DC and overseas.  The program places public health professionals at all career stages in two-year fellowships; promotes a diversity initiative aimed at providing internship and mentoring opportunities in international public health to underrepresented communities; and provides professional and organizational development activities to maximize results of USAID programs and strengthen its leadership role in global health.

Fellowships are open to junior, mid-level and senior public health professionals.  Interested parties must apply for individual assignments as they become open.  To receive notice of new openings for fellows, you can join the listserv at www.ghfp.net/rec.cfm.

Tulane will play a number of roles in GHFP, including outreach, mentoring and support of Fellows, program monitoring and evaluation, and the development of non-USAID placements with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), faith-based organizations (FBOs) and private voluntary organizations(PVOs). Penny Jessop, faculty in International Health at Tulane, serves as the PVO/NGO/FBO Manager and is responsible for coordinating non-USAID placements.

John Hembling, a Tulane School of Public Health alum 2006 in International Health and also a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer, is the University Program Coordinator.  John will speak at a lunch information session on January 23, 2007 for students to learn more about GHFP and the opportunities that are available to them. Contact John with questions at jhemblin@tulane.edu.

Alumni Profile: Sa'ad Zaheer

Sa'ad Zaheer, a physician from Pakistan, started with his current employer, Duvall County Health Department (DCHD) in Jacksonville, Florida after completing his MPH in Epidemiology at Tulane in 2002.  As Director of Epidemiology/Bioterrorism Surveillance, his department provides surveillance and infectious disease control for a population well over 700,000. Dr. Zaheer attributes his achievements to his father's encouragement toward a career in public health.

Dr. Zaheer has incorporated an extensive internship program that has been operational for about four years.  It serves surrounding universities, providing students with experience and professional growth.  The department has continuted to grow with new ideas in surveillance and research endeavors.  Dr. Zaheer feels that there are numerous opportunities for Tulane students with the department.

Dr. Zaheer also mentors a fellow in the Florida Epidemiologic Investigation Service (EIS) program.  To apply or learn more about that program, go to www.doh.state.fl.us/disease_ctrl/epi/FLEIS/Current_Fellows.htm.

To contact Dr. Zaheer about opportunities with the DCHD or EIS Fellowships, email saad_zaheer@doh.state.fl.us.
