Personal Statement:
Dr. Hughes received her Dr.P.H. in Health Systems Management from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in 1997 and was honored with the Dean’s Scholarship Award for academic excellence. Concurrent with her doctoral studies, Dr. Hughes co-founded and directed the Tulane Master of Medical Management (MMM) degree, an innovative program combining distance learning and traditional classroom approaches to physician management education.
Prior to her doctoral studies, Dr. Hughes directed the executive-format Master of Health Administration (MHA) program for the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and managed executive development offerings for the A.B. Freeman School of Business. Her managerial experience also includes administrative roles at New Orleans General Hospital and the Tulane University Hospital and Clinic.
Dr. Hughes’ academic and research interests include strategic management and assessment of organizational performance in public and private health care settings. In 2004 Dr. Hughes was appointed by Louisiana Governor Kathleen Babineaux Blanco to the Governor’s Health Care Reform Panel, which provides guidance and support to the Department of Health and Hospitals in a continuing effort to improve access and quality of health care in Louisiana. She has facilitated strategic assessments and planning in her work with 200 plus physician executives, in addition to the VHA Gulf States, Tulane Department of Cardiology, LSU Department of Pediatrics, Ochsner Clinic Foundation Asthma Center, Alabama Partnership for Cancer Control for the Underserved, National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems CEO Roundtable, and the Louisiana Office of Public Health.
Dr. Hughes earned a B.S. degree cum laude in Biology from Denison University in Granville, OH and was elected to membership in Phi Beta Kappa. She also holds an M.H.A. and M.B.A. from Tulane University where she was a U.S.P.H.S. Trainee. Dr. Hughes has been elected to membership in Beta Alpha Psi, an accounting honorary, and in Delta Omega, an honorary organization recognizing outstanding contributions to the field of public health.
