Health care is one of the largest sectors of the US economy today and it is projected to grow to 20% of GDP by 2016.  Worthwhile and rewarding careers in this field will be guaranteed as the population ages. Also within emerging economies throughout the world, opportunities for trained health care managers to practice in international settings will grow. As an undergraduate who is considering future career options, a recent graduate contemplating graduate schools, or a working professional planning a career change or enhancement of your skills, you will find that advanced education in health systems management will provide you with the skills, training and knowledge to pursue your chosen career in this exciting and challenging field.

What can you do with a degree in Health Systems Management?

Smart, well trained, and compassionate individuals are needed to solve some of our nation’s most pressing health problems.  Health services managers take on this important responsibility by directing, planning, coordinating, and evaluating health-related service delivery and by motivating and leading the heath care professionals who provide these services to the public.  HSM graduates are prepared to work at all levels of administration; executive, internal management and specialized staff.

Why should I get a management degree in a School of Public Health?

Because we are a part of one of the 40 Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) accredited Schools of Public Health, Tulane's Health Systems Management Degree programs include important core public health knowledge that is not ususally offered to students in business schools, medical schools, allied health or public administration programs. The nation's health problems today stem in large part from public health problems like obesity and smoking as much as from the performance of the health care system. Knowledge of public health is therefore critical for the success of future health care managers and leaders.

Where do your graduates go upon completion of their degrees?

After completing their program, students are employed in a variety of healthcare facilities and organizations, wellness programs, industrial health programs, the insurance industry, not for profit organizations, and governmental agencies at local, state and national levels.
