The target audience is the mid-career physician seeking a career in medical management. The degree program is delivered in an executive format with a mix of distance and on-campus modules and is built on three core principles: 1) Physician leadership: The skill set that makes an effective clinician does not necessarily predict success as a manager. Degree candidates are exposed to key leadership skills including effective communication, negotiation, group dynamics and delegation. 2) Strategic perspective: Physicians who are trained to deal with individual patient interactions need to adopt a larger view of the health care organization. Degree candidates are introduced to critical areas including strategic planning, finance, budgeting, and health care policy. 3) Quality focus: Quality improvement, patient safety, evidence-based services and disease management are becoming increasingly important areas of concern for the physician leader. A public health perspective allows the degree candidate to consider the health care needs of populations. | Program Description The MMM consists of a 42 credit hour curriculum, a Culminating Experience and a 200-hour Practicum, as described in the School’s Practicum Handbook. The program is delivered in an executive format which enables the physician to continue to work while completing the degree. Although most of the courses are taken in distance format, there are several courses which are best delivered in the classroom. These courses are conducted in short on-campus modules and provide an opportunity for peer learning and networking. Perhaps the most valuable component of the MMM program is the long-lasting networking relationships formed between students as they complete their degrees. Faculty in the Department of Health Systems Management originally developed and pioneered the MMM degree at Tulane in 1994. The MMM is now the degree of choice for the busy physician executive. The Tulane MMM degree program is accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) and is offered at the nationally recognized Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The Department is known in the field of health services management education as a proponent of the practitioner-scholar model which emphasizes the integration of professional practice with scholarly activity. The MMM curriculum incorporates the knowledge, understanding, skills and values relevant to management and gives emphasis to the unique competencies required of physician executives in today's health care industry. The MMM curriculum addresses the following broad content areas: - The health status of populations, determinants of health and illness, and factors influencing the use of health care and medical care services
- The organization, financing, and delivery of health services
- The role of accounting, finance, policy, and quantitative analysis in management
- Positioning organizations within their business environment and managing these organizations for continued effectiveness
- Interpersonal communication and leadership skills
- Human resources management
- Performance measurement, quality improvement, and information systems

| SPHL 7950 - Culminating Experience (0 credit hours) All MMM students must complete a culminating experience. Students use course material provided in EMMM 614/714 - Managing Quality and Outcomes for Competitive Advantage class to develop a Public Health Analysis of a quality problem in their workplace and potential solutions to that problem. This Public Health Analysis is presented to fellow students and department faculty one semester later at a poster session held in their last on-campus module. Students receive critical feedback from the attendees (faculty and fellow students) on their analysis. A final Public Health Analysis Manuscript is produced from this feedback. | SPHL 9980 - Practicum (0 credit hours) All students in the MMM program of the department must also complete a 200-hour Practicum, as described in the school’s Practicum Handbook. Students select a local hospital or health care facility to serve as their practicum site. Upper-level administrators in that facility serve as preceptors and the student works on public health issues in that facility as part of the practicum. Students report on the results of their practicum experience to the program director. | Additional Information Program Cost The MMM program tuition costs $36,000. A $7200 discount is given to students who have completed ACPE Section I coursework. This cost is inclusive of all assigned textbooks, course materials, CME credits, breakfast, lunch and snacks. The program cost is subject to change. Whenever increases become necessary, the university will make every effort to keep them to a minimum.
