Master of Medical Management (MMM) The Master of Medical Management (MMM) Program is designed exclusively for physicians who are assuming executive leadership roles in the delivery of health services and who need advanced management and leadership training to support this new direction in their professional careers.
Now more than ever, the health of the nation depends critically on the leadership of physicians who understand the conflicting pressures imposed by government regulation, health care financing arrangements, cost containment pressures, and market competition. Physicians are best able to insure that patient safety, quality of care, and access are maintained in face of these often conflicting pressures, by combining evidenced-based management with their knowledge and experience as clinicians.
Program Objectives The objective of the MMM degree program is to provide advanced management training to physicians in leadership roles. The curriculum includes business courses in financial and fiscal management, leadership development, quality improvement, decision analysis, and strategic management. All courses focus specifically on the physician executive. The MMM consists of a 42 credit hour curriculum and a culminating experience project. The program is delivered in an executive format which enables the physician to continue to work while completing the degree. Although most of the courses are taken in distance format, there are several courses which are best delivered in the classroom. These courses will be conducted in short on-campus modules and will provide opportunity for peer learning and networking. Perhaps the most valuable component of the MMM program is the long-lasting networking relationships formed between students as they complete their degrees.
All students in the MMM program of the department must also complete a 200 contact hour Practicum, as described in the school’s Practicum Handbook. Faculty in the Department of Health Systems Management originally developed and pioneered the MMM degree at Tulane in 1995. The MMM is now the degree of choice for the busy physician executive. The Tulane MMM degree program is accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) and is offered at the nationally recognized Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The Department is known in the field of health services management education as a proponent of the practitioner-scholar model which emphasizes the integration of professional practice with scholarly activity. | |
