Program Mission Statement and Description Building on the strengths of medical education and health systems management, this combined degree program is designed to support the development of aspiring physicians to assume leadership roles in the delivery of health services that improve the health status of individuals and populations. Program Competencies Upon successful completion of the Master of Public Health Program in Health Systems Management, the graduating student will have achieved basic competencies in the management of non-profit and public organizations; in leadership, communication and interpersonal skills, and in health policy formation and community engagement. At the completion of the MPH program in Health Systems Management, graduates will be able to: Admission Requirements The program is available only to students who have already been accepted to Tulane’s School of Medicine and coordinated through the Dean's Office of the School of Public Health and Tropical medicine. After this is done, a formal application to the MD/MPH Combined Degree Program can then be filled out attaching a career statement, information release form and two or three letters of recommendation to the application. Program Requirements Students in this joint MD/MPH program complete course work in health systems management concurrent with their medical school curriculum. At least two summers are typically necessary to complete the joint degree. The MPH curriculum for this joint degree consists of a minimum 42 credit hours, that includes at least 12 credit hours of public health core classes, 19 credit hours of management core classes, 11 credit hours of electives, a 200-hour practicum and Culminating Experience and publc health analysis. The student's advisor must approve the practicum before it begins. The requirements for the MPH practicum are in the School's Practicum Handbook.
