Program Mission Statement The mission of the Master of Public Health program in Global Health Systems Management is to prepare individuals for successful management and leadership careers in global health and policy organizations.
Program Description A program of study that develops skills and competencies in a range of managerial functions needed for top- and mid-level mangement positions in public-sector or NGOs, with a primary focus on strengthening health systems and health service delivery. The three focus areas for the MPH are: - International: for students wishing to work outside the United States upon graduation;
- Policy: for students interested in health policy issues;
- Individualized: for students with clearly defined objectives best met by an individualized selection of electives.
Program Competencies At the completion of the MPH program in Health Systems Management, graduates will be able to: - Management of non-profit and public organizations: Engage in planning and decision-making, organizing, supervising, monitoring and evaluating a non-profit or government organization’s human, fiscal, physical, and information resources to achieve organizational goals in an efficient and effective manner. - Leadership, communication and interpersonal skills: Provide organizational leadership, vision and direction through effective team building, interpersonal and communications skills, including the ability to judge what needs to be communicated, and how communication should take place. - Health policy development and community engagement: Be able to assess and advocate for the health needs and expectations of groups of major and diverse community stakeholders based on a broad knowledge of population health and health systems and its implications for government, institutional, and community policy formulation.(Supporting coursework: HSMG 6320;HSMG 6370; HSMG 6450;SPHL 7950; SPHL 9980)
Admission Requirements Students must meet the School's requirements to be considered for admission to the MPH program. In addition, all applicants must complete an interview by phone, internet phone, or in person with a department faculty member. Students may enroll in the MPH dual concentration program in the fall, spring, or summer. Program Requirements To graduate with an MPH in Global Health Systems Management, students must complete 45 credit hours of coursework (42 hours for MD/MPH students and MD graduates). Course work includes 18 credit hours of public health core classes, 17 credit hours of program and management core classes and 10 credit hours of electives. Students must also complete a 200-hour practicum. The student's advisor must approve the practicum before it begins. The requirements for the MPH practicum are in the School's Practicum Handbook. Students are also required to complete a Culminating Experience. MPH students will develop and present a Public Health Analysis on a pressing, local public health issue. Additional Requirements Students in the global concentration MPH Program are required to undertake a 200 hour practicum in a US or global health setting and to complete a culminating experience.
