Doctoral Degree Programs

The doctoral programs in Health Systems Management prepare students for research, academic careers and leadership roles in policy and management of health services. Two doctoral degree programs are offered to meet varied needs.

Applicant Profile
  • Exceptional bachelor’s degree holders and recent MPH or MHA graduates.
  • Mid-career professionals with relevant master’s degree.

Career Path

  • Teaching, research and policy analysis
  • Research, policy analysis, and evaluation
Format
  • Residential for 18-24 months followed by research
  • Executive format with 1 weekend per month for first 2 years, followed by distance based research
Total Credit Hours
  • 60 credits beyond baccalaureate; prior master’s degree holders may apply a maximum of 24 credits
  • 45 credits beyond master’s degree and public health core requirements
Curriculum
  • Individualized to student’s disciplinary interest beyond the requirements in research methods and management core
  • Standardized by cohort design

Teaching Requirement

  • Teaching Assistant for at least one semester
  • Deliver at least two lectures under the supervision of faculty responsible for the course
  • No teaching requirement
Research Involvement Requirement
  • Work for faculty as an RA for at least one semester
  • No research involvement requirement
Funding
  • Tuition waiver and stipend available for exceptional applicants
  • Federally funded student loans
  • Private banking loans
