Dr. Pierre Buekens, Dean of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, recently announced the appointment of Jane Bertrand, PhD, MBA, as Neal A. and Mary Vanselow Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Systems Management. Effective August 1, Dr. Bertrand replaced Dr. Mahmud Khan, who has served as interim chair of the department since July 2007.
Dr. Bertrand earned her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her MA and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. She also holds an MBA from Tulane University. She joined the Tulane faculty as an assistant professor in 1979 becoming a full professor in 1992. Dr. Bertrand served as chair of the Department of International Health and Development at the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine from 1994-1999. She left Tulane in 2001 for Johns Hopkins University, where she became a full professor in the Bloomberg School of Public Health and served as Director of the Center for Communication Programs. Dr. Bertrand has served on numerous boards of professional and educational organizations. She is widely published and is actively involved in research on HIV prevention in the developing world. “I am delighted to be returning home – both professionally and personally,” Dr. Bertrand stated. “I enjoyed the opportunity to direct the Center for Communication Programs at Johns Hopkins, but won’t miss the near-weekly commute to Baltimore. Tulane is a very special school. I am constantly reminded of this when I run into our very impressive alumni on the frontlines of public health and health care delivery, both in the United States and in developing countries. I am especially looking forward to working with the HSM faculty, staff, and alumni in expanding to new areas (e.g., a stronger research portfolio, a greater involvement in international work), while maintaining the strength and reputation of our teaching programs.” In his announcement to the faculty, staff and students, Dean Buekens said, “Jane is an experienced academic administrator and we are very fortunate that she has decided to return to Tulane. Please join me in welcoming Jane back to the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and in thanking Mahmud [Khan] for his outstanding service as acting chair.” Research Interests: program evaluation, operations research, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS Click Here to View Dr. Bertrand's Faculty Profile |
