Epidemiology is a broad discipline for the study of disease as it affects groups of individuals. It is complementary to clinical medicine which focuses on the individual patient. However, much cross-fertilization exists between the two disciplines. Problems arising out of clinical medicine are often solved by epidemiologic methods and the results of epidemiological research often find application in the prevention and treatment of disease.
