Nominations are solicited and new members elected in the spring of each academic year. The spring election includes graduates from August, December, and those anticipated in May. The election of faculty and alumni is held each fall along with nominations for honorary membership and any open positions for officers. Qualifications for Election of Faculty, Alumni, and Graduating Students Graduating Students To be elected to the Delta Omega Society, a student must (1) be in the upper 25% in class standing, and (2) demonstrate real or potential qualities of leadership in public health. The number of elected is 10% of the graduating students for current academic year (including Spring, Summer, and Fall graduates). Alumni Bylaws, Sec. 2G. "Each institution shall have the privilege each year of electing to membership a maximum of 10 graduates to the local school of public health whose work in the practice of public health would serve as a model for future graduates of the school. Members who have been previously elected as alumni shall hereafter have the status of active members." Faculty Bylaws, Sec. 2F. "Members of the faculty shall be selected by a nominating committee of at least three members appointed by the chapter president. This selection committee will give particular attention to outstanding public health performance in scholarship, teaching, research, and the quality of publications through a careful review of curriculum vitae. The total number of faculty members elected in any one year may be five (or three percent of the full-time faculty, whichever is less)." Department faculty are encouraged to provide information about good potential members to the departmental member of the Nominating Committee. In order to inform voting members about graduating students eligible for election, the departmental chairperson or his/her Delta Omega representative will be allowed to make a brief oral presentation to summarize the background and abilities of the graduating students from that department. Time allowed for these presentations will be limited maximum 10 minutes per department. As stated in the bylaws, only faculty members present at the graduate election will be allowed to vote. |
