Health Informatics

The Health Informatics concentration prepares students for a variety of careers within public health, other health sciences, and in careers requiring quantitative skills that are outside the health field.  Students develop analytical skills valuable for the solution of a wide variety of problems both within and beyond the health sciences. They learn how computer applications relate to the acquisition, management, analysis, and dissemination of information. Emphasis is placed on the effective use of information and information technology, as well as the effective management of information technology projects. 

Specific competencies include:

  • Utilize processes for collecting and maintaining data and information.
  • Summarize and interpret information relevant to an issue
  • Utilize modern information technology tools to support public health data acquisition, management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Utilize modern information science and technology strategies to promote public health education.
  • Demonstrate recognition of appropriate roles and domains for computer scientists, biostaticians, epidemiologists, and information technology specialists in information systems development.
  • Apply accepted processes for developing information systems and or managing information resources.
