PACE is a 5-year project to identify and address barriers to physical activity in a neighborhood and assess the impact of environmental changes to the neighborhood. The intervention neighborhood is a subsection of the St. Roch/St. Claude community. We are currently in Year 4 of the project, with many of the project goals completed. - Baseline surveys of both our intervention neighborhood and two comparison neighborhoods were conducted in 2006.
- PACE provided paid staff at the Drew Elementary School Playground so that the playground could remain open after school and on weekends.
- PACE provided funding for a walking path on the St. Roch Avenue neutral ground. The New Orleans Office of Recovery and Development Administration provided additional funding so that the walking path could be extended from the St. Roch Market to Independence Square. PACE is also working with the city to ensure that landscaping is provided along the path.
- Five lay health advisors have been hired to develop projects throughout the community. These projects include a neighborhood newsletter, planting of trees, and advocacy efforts to improve drainage.
- Follow up surveys will be conducted in the fall Fall of 2008.
