MCH Executive Program – Fall 2008

This program is designed for current public health professionals in both public and private health organizations who wish to advance their careers and assume greater leadership in MCH. The MCH Executive Master program allows the public health professional to gain skills immediately applicable to their profession, join a network of MCH public health professionals, and develop mentoring relationships within MCH.

Entry criteria will include:

  • At least five years experience working in public health or healthcare with preference given to persons whose work has been in the field of MCH
  • Current employment in an organization that provides MCH services or is involved in MCH policy/advocacy 
  • Evidence that the organization is supportive of developing the MCH leadership skills of the trainee as determined by a letter from the trainee’s agency director

Monthly 90-minutes seminars highlighting public health leadership currently relating to the post-Katrina New Orleans environment. Guest speakers are invited from the New Orleans community 
to discuss their personal leadership development and a specific public health challenge in post-Katrina
New Orleans. Speakers will be selected for their outstanding contribution to public health in New Orleans.

Current post-Katrina seminars cover the following topics:
 1. Speakers background and education - How did you come to public health?
 2. Personal perception of public health leadership and leadership development
 3. Post-Katrina public health problem speaker was involved with
 4. Challenges faced/are facing in post-Katrina New Orleans
 5. How did the speaker overcome these challenges?
 6. What were the speaker’s successes?
 7. What has the speaker learned from the Katrina experience?
 8. Who are leaders in public health that the speaker admire or have learned from?

MCH Student Advisory Board

The MCH student forum creates a student run space for MATCH Scholars to practice skills gained from the MATCH Leadership Development Seminar Series. At each student forum, a different MATCH scholar will develop the meeting agenda and facilitate the meeting. Students will gain practice in group facilitation, materials development, publicity, public speaking, budget development, and non-academic writing. Each semester, the MCH student forum will produce a newsletter including articles about MATCH Post-Katrina Seminar series speakers, student research, and volunteer opportunities.

Activities

  • Once monthly brown bag meetings to discuss current issues in MCH in an informal setting
  • Bring interesting journal articles for discussion
  • Share information about Capstone resources
  • Discuss MCH classes and tips for success
  • Develop ideas for expansion of MCH section
  • Invite faculty, alumni, and community members to discuss challenges and successes in MCH
