How will the MCPHLT program improve the health of women, children, and families in Louisiana? |
| In post-Katrina Louisiana, public health faces many challenges and the opportunity to create a new future for Louisiana. Improving conditions and mitigating risk-factors by achieving the Healthy People 2010 goals supports the ultimate goal of improving the health and well being of our nation's women, infants, children, and families. The MCHB Maternal and Child Health Training Program (MCHTP), of which the MCPHLT is a grantee, is a key force for ensuring a culturally competent and diverse workforce that possesses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to meet the unique MCH population need. |
| The Tulane MCPHLT program fosters links between community members, faculty, and students toward the greater goal of growing the next generation of MCH leaders. |

Why do we need MCH Leadership in Louisiana? |
Pre-Katrina statistics placed Louisiana's poverty rate at 20.3%; the highest among the 50 states and nearly twice the national average. Nearly 1 in 5 persons in Louisiana lives in poverty. Women and children always lose in impoverished societies. Louisiana has consistently some of the worst maternal and child health outcomes in the nation. Louisiana ranks 2nd in percentage of low birth weight babies, 5th in neonatal deaths, 4th in infant mortality, and 15th in the percentage of women receiving late or no prenatal care. |
