Vasectomy Characteristics in the United States

Dates: July 1994 - current
Funding Source: Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH)
Tulane's Role: Prime contractor (other Subcontractor: Engender Health; Technical Assistance: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - CDC)

The present study was undertaken in order to provide a much-needed profile of men undergoing vasectomy in the U.S.  Data were gathered from a nationally representative sample of medical practices that performed vasectomy during the July 1998 to June 1999 period.  The study provides the most statistically reliable profile of U.S. men choosing vasectomy currently available.  In addition to the data on differentials in the use of vasectomy by race, income and education, the study provides valuable new information on mens previous use of contraception, involvement in contraception decision-making, and reasons for choosing vasectomy.
