$4.47 Million Awarded to Mentor Public Health Professionals

Tulane University is slated to receive $4.47 million from the USAID Global Health Fellowship program to help recruit and mentor public health professionals with an interest in international health and development. Penny Jessop, an instructor at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, is leading the Tulane component of the five-year project, in collaboration with the Public Health Institute, the Harvard School of Public Health, The United Negro College Fund Special Programs, Management Systems International and the University of Washington. Dominique Meekers, chair of the department of international health and development, will lead the faculty mentoring component of the program. According to Jessop, current and former public health students across the country can apply for the fellowships. Accepted applicants will be placed internationally with faith- based organizations, nongovernmental organizations, private voluntary organizations and USAID programs. Fellowships are two years long, and internships for undergraduate and graduate students are three months long. The fellowship and internship opportunities will be announced through the Public Health Institute. (M.
