Advising Guidelines and Graduation Requirements

  • Advising guidelines: A copy of the latest version of the advising guidelines for masters students is available at Advising Guidelines.  This includes much of the material found here on the website but also provides forms needed by current students to complete graduation requirements.

  • SPHTM and departmental core courses: 45 total credit hours must be successfully completed before graduation.  Students who demonstrate competencies in the core courses may apply for waiver of those courses from the appropriate department but the over all number of credits to be completed remains the same. View a listing of the core courses.

  • Practicum and culminating experiences: The practicum activity in international health is designed to provide the student with the experience of working in the actual, or simulated environment of the international development field. Students will be asked to apply the knowledge and skills acquired in their coursework to practical settings. All students in the department are required to complete a field practicum of 300 hours. Students are assigned as apprentices to an international organization or program working on a health/development project. After completion of the practicum, the student will present a written report to his/her faculty advisor on the technical aspects of the work performed (e.g., an analysis of the design, management and evaluation of the agency or project). Click here for more information on the Practicum or the Culminating Experience.

  • Language proficiency: Students are required to demonstrate proficiency in a language other than English prior to graduation. Proficiency is determined by an oral exam given by a member of the Department's faculty or staff.  Learn more about the language requirement.
