Marcos Arevalo, MD, MPH (and former Humphrey Fellow) Marcos is the director of biomedical research at the Institute for Reproductive Health and an assistant professor at Georgetown University. Talal Bakfalouni, 1999-2000 HHH fellow After that he received a master degree in International Healthcare Management, Economics and Policy from Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. As of 2005, he was appointed as deputy chairman of State Planning Commission for international cooperation affairs (this is equivalent to a deputy minister position) in Syria. Eric Bullington, MPH Eric is combining his two lovers, public health and languages. He’s currently working as a freelance translator, specializing in medical, pharmaceutical, and public health translations. To find out more go to www.clinicaltranslations.com John Butts, MPH 2006 John received the Dean’s Scholarship Award at the SPHTM Awards ceremony on May 18th. He is currently working for the Louisiana Public Health Institute as the Regional Coordinator for the Tobacco-Free Living Program. Yin Yin Aung, MPH (and former Humphrey Fellow) For the last five years Yin Yin has been working for UNICEF-Myanmar. She says that she has learned many things in this time period and finds the work very rewarding. She has met many people and traveled extensively. Recently, while attending a training workshop in Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok she met Dr. Mahmud Khan from the IHD faculty. Shortly she will be moving to Dili, Timor Leste to work with UNICEF/Dili as the EPI project officer. Shahid Mahbub Awan MD, MPH, PGD (and former Humphrey Fellow) Shahid is currently working with as the program officer for Iodine Deficiency Disorder. The UN World Food Program is working on universal salt iodization in 29 northern districts of Pakistan. He hopes to reduce the incidence problems from endemic and severe Iodine deficiency in these areas. (He reminded us that Pakistan and India are the world’s two worst affected countries.) Prior to this assignment he was working with The Asia Foundation as program officer for implementation of an interactive Behavior Change Communication project to generate demand for treatment of TB patients from public sector facilities, under the WHO-DOTS regime. Isha Bangura, MPH In July 2006, Isha accepted a job offer for a permanent position with Georgia's Department of Community Health in the managed care and quality division as a quality control coordinator. This position will require her to look at clinical quality outcomes to determine if Medicaid recipients are receiving quality care. Susan Bergson, MPH Susan works for the Louisiana Public Health Institute as program manager of urban health initiatives. She’ll be working on initiatives focused on health care reform in New Orleans and Louisiana in general. She will be working under Clayton Williams, another of our grads. Kathryn Boryc, MPH Kathryn transitioned to Global Health Fellows Program from Michigan's Pop Fellows Program; she has been working in Guyana for the past year and half. She was with the Ministry of Health for a little over a year starting up an Adolescent Health Program for the primary health care system, and just recently transferred over to USAID/Guyana and is working as their strategic information officer. Jorge Castilla, MPH Jorge has finished four years with the European Union in charge of humanitarian funding for 17 countries in West Africa and a short contract with WHO in Geneva to develop guidelines and training on pandemic influenza preparedness and mitigation for displaced and refugees. His next destination and home for several years will be as the WHO/PAHO manager of health for refugee/displaced persons in Colombia and five surrounding countries, based in Bogotá. Aimee Centivany, MPH Aimee is the senior technical advisor for the Infant and Young Child Feeding Programs at USAID in Washington. She just completed a fellowship with the Reproductive Health Association of Cambodia (RHAC www.rhac.org.kh), which was an excellent opportunity to build the public health capacity of the organization and gain significant professional development experience. Gwyneth (Hogley) Cotes, MPH After eight months working as the nutrition coordinator for GOAL's programs in Darfur, Sudan, Gwyneth accepted a position as the health and nutrition advisor for Concern Worldwide based in Lilongwe, Malawi. Nancy (Baughman) Csuti, MPH, DrPH Nancy is the Director of Evaluation for The Colorado Trust, a large health foundation in Colorado. Issakha Diallo, MD, MPH, DrPH Issakha is the principal program associate at the Center for Health Outcomes at Management Sciences for Health in Arlington, VA. Malick Diara, MD, MBA, MPH Malick is the malaria program manager for the Rational Pharmaceutical Management Plus Project at Management Sciences for Health in Arlington, VA. Crystal Dreisbach, MPH Crystal is working at Family Health International in Chapel Hill, NC. She is deeply immersed in the monitoring and evaluation activities that she trained for at Tulane. She has just been named the technical monitor for a global microbicides database project. Chris Dunston, MPH 1999 Amy Dunston, MPH 1999 Chris and Amy have been living in Madagascar for the past eight years. There were originally brought there by CARE to design and manage an Urban Livelihood Security Program and Safe Water Systems program. About 4 years ago and Chris started his own consulting firm, Prospect International, a social and economic project development and management consulting firm located in Antananarivo. They are currently working with the CDC, Ministry of Health and Family Planning, coffee growers, minerals companies, and CARE. Kayt Erdahl, MPH Kayt is working for Project HOPE as the Program Specialist for Infectious Diseases for the Russia/Eurasia unit. In addition she is working on TB and HIV prevention programs in Central Asia, Russia and Ukraine. She travels a great deal and was recently part of a mid-term assessment team for HOPE’s 5-year TB program in Central Asia. Haim Feingold, (former Humphrey Fellow) Haim is the Executive Director of Orr Shalom, a series of homes for abused or neglected children in Israel. Haim was in New Orleans this fall and spoke to our students about his work with Orr Shalom. It was very moving to see his passion for the children of his region and his hunger for knowledge about other child centered programs that are looking at experimental alternatives for the care of children outside their biological homes. Jason Feldman, MPH (2005) Jason is a HSHPS Research Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Center for Environmental Health, Emergency and Environmental Health Services in Atlanta, Georgia. Kelly Gillin, MPH After working as a consultant with UNICEF/New York in their Strategic Information Systems department, Kelly has accepted a permanent position as a Program Development Specialist with Intrahealth in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She would love to hear from other alums in the area. Megan Harris-Wysong, MPH (2003) Megan is working for the Institute for OneWorld Health as the Project Manager for Field Research, Monitoring and Evaluation. OneWorld Health is the first nonprofit pharmaceutical company in the US with a mission to develop orphan drugs for neglected diseases in developing countries. She will be working with a team on the distribution of a new, safe, effective and inexpensive drug that can cure visceral leishmaniasis, a parasitic disease spread by sand flies, in India. Abdul Jabbar A. I. Hasan, 1991-92 HHH fellow Abdul is the Deputy Chief of Nursing Services at the Psychiatric Hospital of Bahrain. He is working on the restructure of the nursing organization of the 210 bed hospital and 26 bed alcohol and drug rehab unit. He continues to work on the improvement of health services through training and preparing the efficient manpower and developing effective programs keeping in mind community participation. Ken Heise, MPH After working in Uganda for nearly five years, Ken has moved to Tanzania as the resident advisor for the Leadership, Management and Sustainability Program of Management Sciences for Health. Under this program, he provides technical support to the Tanzania Commission for AIDS and the Zanzibar AIDS Commission; helps build the capacity of the Global Fund Country Coordinating Mechanisms, and; co-manages a small grants program for civil society organizations involved in HIV/AIDS work in Tanzania and Zanzibar. Ken has met up with several other Tulanians in the region as well—Bob Dewolfe (HIV/AIDS program director, CARE), Tim Manchester (director of program development/East Africa, Constella Futures), and Nick Southern (country director, CARE). John Hembling, MPH 2006 John received the Carroll Behrhorst Primary Health Care Award at the SPHTM Awards ceremony on May 18, 2007. John is currently the University Program Coordinator for the Global Health Fellowship Program. He is also active in the Hispanic community in New Orleans providing translations in clinical settings and conducting trainings for community health educators. Maggie Janes, MPH Maggie is the program manager with CRS for the HIV/AIDS Livelihoods project in Svay Rieng in Cambodia. She had just completed a wonderful experience working for MEASURE/Macro. She said she learned a great deal working for Dr. Erin Eckert (also one of our grads). Teresa Jenna, MPH and SOCMOB 1997 Teresa was a UNICEF director in Hong Kong. She has now become the Program Representative Post to head up the UK NGO Marie Stopes International as Director in Papua New Guinea. She is currently working with the department to help place a Tulane student with her organization for a summer practicum. Renee Johnson, MPH, (2004) Matt Heffron, MPH, (2004) Renee and Matt have been living and working in Zambia for one and a half years now. Renee is doing epidemiology work with the CDC and Matt is the program officer for JHPIEGO. Karim Kabir, MPH Karim is working with AHED (Association for Health & Environmental Development), an international NGO, as a Civil Society Reference Group Coordinator. He is working on a WHO project to build Knowledge Networks for social determinants of health. Adnan Kisa, PhD Adnan is now the Associate Dean and Professor at Baskent University, School of Health Sciences, Department of Healthcare Administration, in Turkey. Abu Kampo, MD, MPH (former HHH Fellow) Abu writes that he is the Roving Technical advisor for IMC and covers the world for them. He is currently based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and flies out where the need is on demand from the Desk Officer. Diepiriye Sungumote Kuku-Siemons, MPH Diepiriye has been in New Delhi for the past three years working on a PhD in sociology (sexual minority communities) and consulting for a USAID project on contraceptives and diarrhea. He is doing his research and writing as well as helping to plan behavior change communications.
Michelle M. Lang-Alli, MPH Michelle is the Regional Technical Advisor for Health, South East Asia Pacific Region Office with Catholic Relief Services. She writes that she is thoroughly enjoying it, being exposed to new countries in the region.
Jennifer Anne Leopold (McCollum), MPH After graduation Jennifer lived in DC and worked with MSH and the Rational Pharmaceutical Management (RPM) Plus Program. She is currently working as a senior program associate with a project to improve the availability of uterotonic medicines for the active management of third stage of labor (AMTSL), a strategy to reduce maternal mortality caused by post-partum hemorrhage. Meskele Lera, MPH Meskele is taking on the role of Deputy Director General, Federal HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office, Addis Ababa. Congratulations. Great to see how our alumni are making their contributions to this fight. Melanie (Kindsfather) López, MPH Melanie is working for World Vision as a program/technical specialist for the Latin America and Caribbean region. She provides technical support to the field offices in regards to various projects including health and education. Maria Isabel G. Loureiro, MD, MPH, PhD (and former Humphrey Fellow) Isabel is an Associate Professor and Coordinator for Health Promotion & Protection at the National School of Public Health in Portugal. Abdullahi Maiwada, MPH (and former Humphrey Fellow) Abdullahi is working for USAID/Nigeria as a reproductive health program manager in Nigeria. Timothy G. Manchester, MPH Tim is Director of Program Development/East Africa for Constella Futures, with offices in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania Michael Manske, MPH 2005 Michael is a Mickey Leland Nutrition Fellow at the Congressional Hunger Center. Mikula, DVM, MPH, ScD Last year Wayne founded, and is executive director of The RainTree Initiative (RTI), a corporate non-profit that identifies promising young scholars in developing countries interested in studying environmental health, engineering, policy and law at the graduate level to become tomorrow's global environmental leaders. They are in the fund raising and development phase of the program. The first contingent of students is expected to be enrolled in January 2008. Wayne said, “My MPH track within INHL was "International Environmental Health Management and Policy." It was that experience that motivated me to create The RainTree Initiative. The time I spent relating to and studying alongside people from Africa, Asia and the Americas inspired me to undertake my doctoral research in Nicaragua, providing the basis for my recent decisions and the formation of RTI. I still keep in contact with several people I met while a member of INHL. I consider that time in my life experience formative for what the rest of my life is to be about.”
Ericka Moerkerken, MPH Ericka recently finished a population-environment fellowship in Guatemala under the Michigan Pop Fellows Program. It was a very fulfilling experience, and she said she “learned so much, it has really changed my life and perspectives, and fueled some more my thinking about international development and health.” Ericka is now doing fundraising/proposal writing/project development with MEXFAM, the Mexican Foundation for Family Planning in Mexico City. It is an interesting organization, facing recent change in leadership and restructuring, change in government and maintaining a decentralized structure to provide reproductive health services and education all over Mexico in about 21 clinics. Jessica Moschella, MPH Jessica is the Supervisor of Prevention Ed., Outreach, & Counseling Programs at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Boston. She is working with Harvard Medical school students on a research project in Port Elizabeth, South Africa this summer. In preparation for that trip, she is training a group of 1st year medical students in HIV/Public Health issues and research. They will be doing surveys and focus groups on the education material HIV+ people receive (or do not receive) about ARVs. The goal is to find out how people would like to receive information about HIV treatment, and then begin the process of developing materials, designing training for educators, etc. Jessica will be the ongoing coordinator with a new group of students every few months. Sujata Ishwar Naik, MPH Sujata worked in Haiti as Monitoring and Evaluation administrator for a USAID maternal health grant. She was also a research associate for maternal health research in Haiti through the OB/GYN department of the University of Michigan. Ngone Abes Niang, MPH Ngone worked in Botswana as a United Nations Volunteer (2001-2002), and as a Consultant in Senegal. Since 2005, she has been a Technical adviser at the General Secretary of the Office of the President in Dakar (Senegal). Jessica E. Posner, MPH Jessica is working at John Snow Inc. (JSI) as a management and evaluation officer, a job that requires much traveling especially for her projects in Uganda. Maryanne Pribila, MPH 2002 With the completion of YouthNet, a global youth reproductive health and HIV prevention project, Maryanne Pribila relocated to Family Health International’s (FHI) Nairobi Regional Office to support youth activities in Sub-Saharan Africa. Her primary role as a Senior Technical Officer is to provide assistance to the APHIA II (AIDS Population and Health Integrated Assistance) program in Coast and Rift Valley Provinces. She will also support youth programs in Tanzania and Botswana, as well as FHI country offices such as Nigeria. Mirriam Rafiq, MPH Mirriam has accepted the position of program officer with PATH (www.path.org) in Hanoi, Vietnam. The Vietnam program focuses on infectious diseases/immunizations, maternal and child health, adolescent health and gender violence, and HIV/AIDS. Mirriam continues to be a public health consultant and member of the Board of Directors of Sahaya, International (www.sahaya.org). Stephen Rahaim, MPH Stephen is working for PATH in the DC office helping them build some internal structure and systems, to catch up with the massive program growth they have experienced, as well as managing most of their major program bids. LaQuita Rogers, MPH U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer, South Africa- HIV NGO Capacity Building Program LaQuita was sworn-in as a U.S. Peace Corps Volunteer after two months of training. Her permanent site is in Klerksdorp, North West Province working with the South African Department of Health with their ARV treatment program at Klerksdorp/Tshephong ARV Wellness Clinic. She will also be working with the Reproductive Health Research Unit (RHRU) of Wits University with their mobile ARV treatment program. Chandra Rudyanto, MPH After 15 years in the Directorate of Water and Sanitation, Chandra became the program officer at the Centre of Health Promotion, Ministry of Health, Indonesia. Chandra's country is dealing with the agenda on Avian Influenza control. Jakarta is suffering from AI outbreaks. The victims and casualties are growing. In order to cope with the AI outbreak, his office, the Center for Health Promotion has formed a Rapid Response Team with a focus on the Health Promotion efforts. Myint Myint Sein, MD, DMA, MPH Myint Myint has been working since early in 2006 as a UN Volunteer in Pakistan. She is the reproductive health officer and head of the WHO office for the earthquake affected people in Mansehra, the red zone. She came back to Tulane recently to make a presentation of her work for the MPH students and was highly received. Jim Setzer, MPH Jim is a senior associate of Abt Associates. He continues to telecommute from Atlanta, Georgia and work on projects worldwide. Kelly Smith, MPH (2005) After completing Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic as part of the master internationalist program, Kelly has gone on to the Francis J. Curry National Tuberculosis Center at UCSF in San Francisco, CA. The Center is a CDC funded regional TB training facility. She is a program manager and works with health education in the western region of the US. Here’s what Kelly said in her email, “I really do enjoy my job and don't think I would have gotten it if it weren't for studying at Tulane and serving in the Peace Corps.” Emily Sonneveldt, MPH Emily is a senior reproductive health specialist on the POLICY project for the Futures Group, a Constella Company. Sarah Smith, MPH Following graduation, Sarah took a position at Futures Group, working on the POLICY Project. After Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma, she was recruited for as a mental health program analyst with Educational Services, Inc. (ESI), a government contractor, to work on-site at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in the Emergency Mental Health and Traumatic Stress Services Branch. Stephen Sosler, PhD, MPH Stephen is an epidemiologist working with the Global Immunization Division of the CDC. He is officially seconded to the WHO as the Measles Focal Point for the Central Africa Region (Angola, Burundi, Cameroon, CAR, Chad, Congo-Brazza, DRC, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon and Rwanda). Though the majority of his responsibilities revolve around measles – surveillance, vaccination campaigns and outbreak investigations, he is also very much involved in polio eradication activities, yellow fever control and integrated disease surveillance in general. Larry Sthreshley, DrPH Larry continues to be involved with SANRU in Congo. He is now the chief of party for a very large USAID grant in South East Congo. The project is working with JHU on a computerized health and management information system, health financing through community developing projects (“HMO Congo style”) and “All the usual programs; Vaccination, Malaria, Micro nutrients, AIDS, Family planning, etc.” Sonia Stines, MPH (1996) Sonia has been traveling and working overseas since graduation. She worked for CARE and CRS in Haiti for about seven years where she also got married and had two girls. She then moved to Tanzania with CRS for the next three years. She and the family have just moved to Zambia where Sonia is the chief of party of a PEPFAR Palliative Care/Home Based Care project. Kevin Sturr, MPH Kevin is the Democracy and Governance Officer for USAID in Harare, Zimbabwe. This is a foreign service officer posting. Tran Duc Thuan, MD, MPH Tran was a faculty member of Hanoi School of Public Health (Vietnam) for four years following graduation. For the last two years he has been working as the education and training officer for the Department of Science and Training, a division of the Ministry of Health of Vietnam. Manuela Villar-Uribe, MPH 2006 Manuela received the James P. Grant Child Survival Award at the SPHTM Awards ceremony on May 18, 2007. Manuela is currently doing a post-grad internship at PAHO in Washington, DC. Joshua Volle, DrPH Joshua is now the director of HIV prevention for the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. Sixte Zigirumugabe, MA, MPH Sixte has been in Mali for 10 years, of which five years has been with USAID as the Mali Health Team/CH Officer. |
