Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine continues to attract the attention of the prestigious Fulbright Program.  At least two students, one alumna, and one faculty have received fellowship from the organization over the past several months.

Brian Adams, an MD/MPH student, used his Fulbright Fellowship to travel to Romania to study the emergence of a strain of tuberculosis that can’t be cured with standard antibiotic therapy.  He will spend 10 months in Moldova learning about and promoting the visibility of this major global health risk.

Elizabeth Bunde, a doctoral student in international health and development is in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she is pursuing a project studying female sex workers and their male clients to examine the role of social networks in HIV/AIDS knowledge, risk perception, attitudes and condom use.

Kathryn Rosecrans, a 2008 international health and development alumna, is studying the knowledge, attitudes and practices regarding Chagas disease in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.  Chagas disease is a potentially fatal parasitic disease transmitted by insects.

The Fulbright Scholarship will also take Donald Krogstad, Henderson professor in the Department of Tropical Medicine, to the University Bamako in Mali where he will continue to research AQ-13, an anti-malaria drug he’s worked to develop.  Krogstad has been studying drug-resistant malaria for more than 20 years.

Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program aims to increase mutual understanding between the peoples of the United States and other countries. It provides grants for international educational exchange for scholars, educators, graduate students and professionals. The Fulbright Program is one of the most respected awards programs worldwide, operating in 144 countries.
