| | By Donna Kulawiak and Laura Horne | This semester, Jane Bertrand, PhD, MBA, became chair of the Department of Health Systems Management, replacing Mahmud Khan, who served as interim chair of the department since July 2007.
Most recently, Bertrand served as director of the Center for Communication Programs and a full professor for the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University since 2001. Prior to her position at Hopkins, Bertrand served as professor and chair of the Department of International Health and Development at Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She earned her undergraduate degree from Brown University and her MA and PhD from the University of Chicago. She also holds an MBA from Tulane University.
“I am delighted to be returning home – both professionally and personally,” said Bertrand, “Tulane is a very special school. I am constantly reminded of this when I run into our very impressive alumni on the frontlines of public health and health care delivery, both in the United States and in developing countries.”
Bertrand has served on numerous boards of professional and educational organizations and is actively involved in research on HIV prevention in the developing world. Her research interests include program evaluation, operations research, reproductive health, and HIV/AIDS.
“I am especially looking forward to working with the HSM faculty, staff, and alumni in expanding to new areas, such as research and international work, while maintaining the strength and reputation of our teaching programs,” said Betrand.
In his announcement to the faculty, staff and students, Dean Pierre Buekens said, “Jane is an experienced academic administrator and we are very fortunate that she has decided to return to Tulane.” Buekens also thanked Mahmud Khan for his service as acting chair. | Editor: Dee Boling Assistant Editor: Laura Horne Contributing Writers: Keith Brannon, Laura Horne, Donna Kulawiak, Arthur Nead, Fran Simon, Madeline Vann Photographers:Paula Burch-Celentano, Dominica Fotino, Alicia Duplessis Jasmin, Jeffery Johnson, Carl Kendall, Rick Olivier, Ryan Rivet, Margarita Silo, Brady Skaggs We continually seek content for publication.
