Spring 2009 Commencement

A total of 286 students received master’s degrees at the spring 2009 commencement of the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, held on the uptown campus in Dixon Hall.  Willard Cates, Jr., president for research at Family Health International, provided the address, highlighting the “golden era where global health has become a burgeoning field.”

“You’re graduating today at the most exciting time in global health with a wealth of opportunities available to you,” he told the enthusiastic crowd.  Drawing on conversations with a number of FMI colleagues who are also Tulane alumni, he encouraged the new graduates to “find your passion, join a winning team, build on your strengths, be collaborative, stay positive, be flexible, and never give up.”

Cates has shown the ability to be flexible in his own career.  He was board certified in general preventive medicine in the 70s and spent 20 years at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  His initial work there revolved around family planning.  As HIV/AIDs appeared on the landscape, he was called upon to address this new global health issue.  He is highly esteemed for breaking new ground in public health by weaving reproductive health research and programming into the context of sexually transmitted infections, including HIV.

Four-Year Undergraduates Received Degrees

Rita Golikeri, right, and Andrew Chan, left, were among the 29 students who were the first to graduate with a four-year undergraduate public health degree from Tulane.

Golikeri was passionate about public health before coming to Tulane; the undergraduate degree offering sealed the deal for her. Chan entered Tulane as a music major, but switched to public health after experiencing the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and realizing the opportunities there were to assist in rebuilding and conducting research.

Chistopher Lane, manager of the undergraduate public health program, notes that the program is continuing to grow with 235 enrolled this year, 75 of whom are first-year students. “We are attracting idealistic students who are interested in learning how they can contribute to a better world globally and nationally.”
