The section of health education focuses on providing students with skills to promote health at the population level. Our strength is in working with communities to assist them in promoting health of their own members. Faculty members have expertise in planning of health education programs, evaluation of health education programs, working with communities to bring about change, and social marketing. Through the course work students learn concepts of community and how to work with community groups, approaches to planning prevention programs, and rigorous methods of evaluating programs. We work closely with many local governmental and nonprofit organizations, so there are many opportunities to hone the skills you learn in the classroom through real-world experiences. In the MPH program, besides taking school core course requirements and department core course requirements (see master of public health), you will take courses in the following:
• Health Communication Theory and Practice
• Community Organization
You must also take an additional 8 credits of courses in Health Education.
To qualify for the Certified Health Educator Specialist (CHES) examination, you must have completed a total of 20 credits in Health Education courses including the Health Education courses in the school core and the department core.
