Personal Statement:
My background is in pediatrics, epidemiology, and control of infectious diseases. I have worked on a child health program in Haiti, in infectious disease epidemiology for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and in prevention of vaccine-preventable diseases, tuberculosis, STDs, and HIV at the Louisiana Office of Public Health. But since I moved to Tulane in 2000, I have taken off on a different track.

My work in prevention of STDs/HIV led me to think about the social forces underlying high-risk sexual behavior. I then became interested in a wide range of health problems prevalent in the U.S. and the social and environmental factors underlying them. I am interested in developing, implementing, and evaluating population-based interventions that act on our social and physical environment. I wrote my ideas on this in a book titled Prescription for a Healthy Nation.

From July 2007 through June 2008, I took a leave of absence to work in the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene on both infectious disease control and promotion of healthy behaviors. I returned to New Orleans in July 2008.
