Personal Statement:
Ted TL Chen is currently the head/professor of the Health Education/Communication Section and Director of Asia-Pacific Health Promotion and Development Office. He has received degrees of BEd from the National Taiwan Normal University, MA from the University of Maryland, MPH from the University of California, Berkeley and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University.
He served as a Professor at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 1971-1991 and for the current faculty position at Tulane University since 1991. He organized and chaired the Asian American Caucus of the American Public Health Association in 1976. In 1986-1990, he was elected to serve as a member of the Executive Board of the American Public Health Association. In 1989, he founded the Asia-Pacific Association for the Control of Tobacco and served as the Permanent Executive Secretary. Besides serving on numerous NIH, CDC review committees and various journal review boards, he is currently serving as an advisor to the Division of Health Policy Research of the National Health Research Institutes of Taiwan.
He has published over 50 research articles in topics related to health promotion and disease prevention. He has conducted studies and projects that covers areas in primary prevention related health policy studies, social mobilization and healthy community building projects, impact of international tobacco marketing on health behavior change and projects related to executive leadership training and community leadership empowerment. He currently teaches courses that include "Behavior Risk Factors Related to Disease Prevention and Health Promotion", "Health Promotion Program Planning" and "Theoretical Foundations of Health Education".
