CAEPH Congratulates Fall 2007 Distance Learning Graduates
Of the Fall 2007 graduates of Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, seven were distance learning students in one of CAEPH’s programs in Occupational and Environmental Health. The convocation ceremony was in Dixon Hall on the Uptown Tulane campus. Joel Lamstein, co-founder and president of John Snow Inc., was be the guest speaker.

Lichtveld Named Woman of the Year
CityBusiness annually honors local women who are making notable contributions to the local community and to society at large. The three Tulane women being honored each have made an impact — in very distinctive ways.

OHSM student article featured in OHS 

We are pleased to mention that an MPH distance learning student in the Occupational Health and Safety Management program co-authored a story in Occupational Heath and Safety Online earlier this year.

New Disaster Management Program via Distance Learning
This fall Tulane has launched the delivery of its program in Disaster Management via live interactive Distance Learning.  A natural addition to the existing programs in Environmental Health and Occupational Health and Safety Management, the program’s availability via this convenient format has generated a lot of interest.

New Blackboard System
Over the summer Technology Services implemented an upgrade of the Blackboard course management system (CMS).  This improved CMS will be easier to use and will have new features that will be useful to faculty and students alike.

Disaster Management Programs Offered Online 
Tulane University has been offering an MPH in Disaster Management since Fall 2006.  Plans are now in the works to make this program 
available online (via synchronous distance learning) as well.

Fall 2007 Admissions
The distance learning programs in environmental health sciences have rolling admissions-- there is no real set deadline to apply to the
programs.  But with the time constraints inherent in a synchronous (live) program with some necessary training and orientation
procedures, the time to apply for fall semester classes is winding down.

CAEPH Conference Activities for May/June
CAEPH personnel will be present at various conferences this month and next and hope to use these venues to see our students and
alumni, and to meet with and answer any questions of prospective candidates who may wish to enroll in our programs.

Warm congratulations to our Spring ‘07 graduates!  
The students were graduated amidst much pomp and circumstance with 2 ceremonies and various other festivities. The morning
unified ceremony in the New Orleans Arena included all Tulane graduates and featured Anchorman Bryan Williams as the
speaker.

CAEPH Alumna elected VP of AIHA Board 
Cathy L. Cole, MPH, CIH, CSP is now the Vice-President elect of the AIHA Board of Directors.  Cathy was one of the first
students to enroll in and receive her degree from Tulane via the Internet Distance Learning program in Occupational Health &
Safety Management (OHSM).

Summer Registration Begins   
R
egistration opens on April 11th for Summer and Fall ‘07 semesters. Distance learning students are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Choices for summer courses can be found at Course Listing Summer 2007 and the calendar for Summer and Fall 07 can be accessed on the left side banner.

New Orleans Hosts ACOEM Annual Meeting and Conference
On May 6th and 7th, the Tulane University’s Center for Applied Environmental Public Health (CAEPH) will be exhibiting at the American
Occupational Health Conference here in New Orleans.

A CAEPH alumnus has written a book!
One of our alumni has recently authored a book we thought might be of interest to our students and alumni. Dr. Paul Hooper (class of 2003, MPH in Occupational Health and Safety Management) has recently published WorkAbility Management: Managing Injured Workers to Minimize Disability.

Practicum and Capstone Changes
The Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH) which accredits Schools of Public Health and one of the organizations that accredit our MPH and MSPH distance learning programs, has revised and updated its requirements for accredited programs. These requirements are for all students who pursue the MPH or MSPH in all disciplines.

Study to Track Post-Katrina Asthma in Kids
Tulane University and the New Orleans Department of Health will jointly lead a 30-month study called HEAL: Head-off Environmental Asthma in Louisiana. The purpose of the study is to learn more about the effects of mold and other indoor allergens on children with asthma in post-Katrina New Orleans. Caeph Distance Learning Program Launches New Website 
The Distance Learning programs at the Center for Applied Environmental Public Health (CAEPH) have launched a new website, more in keeping visually with the rest of the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical  Medicine website, but also designed to be more functional for the students, and with enhanced new features.


Tulane SPHTM Fall 2006 Convocation 
On December 15th the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine celebrated Convocation. Eighty-six students were graduated with Masters and Doctoral degrees; approximately 48 of them participated in 
the ceremony.
