MPH Occupational and Environmental Health (Distance Learning)               

Mission: 

The mission of the Occupational and Environmental Health (OEH) Program is to prepare midcareer health professionals with the knowledge and skills to recognize and prevent occupational injury and illness and to promote health in the workplace. 

Description: 

The MPH in Occupational and Environmental Health Program is designed for physicians, nurses and other midcareer health and environmental professionals who seek to advance within their profession.  The program provides the knowledge and skills to recognize and characterize chemical exposures and hazards, assess health effects, design and implement preventive measures and promote healthy behaviors in the workplace. The program follows MPH didactic requirements for the general preventive medicine and occupational medicine boards.

Program Competencies:

At the completion of the MPH in Occupational and Environmental Health, the graduates will be able to:

1.     Identify, evaluate and manage the effects of occupational hazards on worker health. (ENHS
        6720; ENHS 7200)

2.     Identify, characterize and assess the health effects of chemical agent found in the 
        workplace and in the general environment on workers and the general population. (ENHS
        6600; ENHS 6030)

3.     Interpret the impact of chemical exposures on workers and general populations health
        within the frame work of the route of exposure, estimated dose, duration and frequency of 
        exposure and the acute and chronic effects of the agent (ENHS 6600; ENHS 7620)

4.     Interpret exposure assessment conducted by industrial hygienists and/or other health and
        safety professionals  (ENHS 6720; BIOS 6030)

5.     Conduct work and chemical exposure histories within the framework of the individuals’
        medical history (ENHS 7200)

6.     Utilize population data from hazard and medical surveillance to prevent negative health 
        effects in the work place (EPID 6030; ENHS 7290)

7.     Integrate health promotion, wellness applications and health education into occupational 
        programs (SPHL 6030; ENHS 6050; ENHS 7200)

8.     Design, implement and evaluate primary, secondary and tertiary prevention
        applications including clinical, behavior and environmental interventions for the protection
        of worker health (SPHL 6030; ENHS 6050)

9.     Apply basic concepts of management to plan, budget, and organize occupational health
        programs (HSMG 6010; HSMG 6030)

10.   Demonstrate written and oral communication skills for reaching a variety of target
        audiences including workers and patients, managers and H&S professionals, and other
        scientists and clinicians.  (HSMG 6010; SPHL 6030; ENHS 6050)


Graduation Requirements:

Students must earn a minimum of 42 hours of academic credit: of which School of Public Health Core requirements make up 15 credits hours, OEH program required courses make up 20 credits and OEH elective courses make up 7 credits.  In addition to the academic credit hours students must complete a Culminating Experience and a Practicum.

*Required for students not having an MD or Nursing degree.  Students with other medical qualifications may petition to waive this course if appropriate (course waiver form).


Culminating Experience (0 Credits)

Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine allows students to satisfy the requirements for a Culminating Experience by completing one of the following options.  Additional detail for Culminating Experience may be found at this link: Culminating Experience  

1.     Public Health Analysis Manuscript

2.    Master’s Comprehensive Examination.

Practicum (0 credits)

The Practicum is designed to demonstrate application of core public health knowledge in practice.  Specific competencies for the Practicum may be found at this link: Practicum Requirement .  Professionals working in an appropriate field of public health may be able to waive this requirement if they are able to meet certain conditions, which may be found here.  If you meet waiver requirements the forms may be found at practicum waiver form.

Electives may be selected from the Industrial Hygiene, Disaster Management or Occupational Health and Safety Management program courses.

Admission Requirements

  • A medical degree from an accredited University or baccalaureate degree (nursing or other science related field) with a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale having 40 or more semester hours in science, math, or engineering.

  • Three or more years of experience in health and safety, occupational or environmental health as documented by work history (resume) and stated in letters of recommendation
  • An official undergraduate transcript
  • Three letters of recommendations from three individuals familiar with prior academic and/or professional performance

  • A strong base of computer skills including the ability to use the Internet, to manipulate and organize computer-based files and email, to use MS Office applications (intermediate  proficiency preferred), and to implement technical instructions and guidance for the appropriate
