| | | | | | | The program in Industrial Hygiene is designed for mid-career professionals and leads to the Master of Science in Public Health degree.
The overall goal of the industrial hygiene program is the education and practical training of degreed scientists and engineers as professional industrial hygienists. Graduates are prepared to enter careers in industry, government, academia, and other areas where the skills and competencies of an industrial hygienist are required. The program is designed to provide the academic preparation needed to pass the certification examination administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. As such, graduates are provided with classroom preparation in the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, biological, and physical health stressors in the workplace and indoor environments.
In light of these programmatic goals, the specific learning objectives of the Industrial Hygiene Program are: | | | | | - Use basic scientific and engineering principles to anticipate and identify potential hazards in the workplace.
| - Apply the methods and techniques of analytical chemistry and other measurement sciences to quantify the degree of hazard of identified occupational health stressors.
| - Interpret toxicology literature and health data and incorporate these into the management of occupational health hazards.
| - Apply principles of engineering in the design of appropriate controls for workplace hazards, with emphasis on general and local exhaust ventilation.
| - Select, evaluate, and manage the use of appropriate types of personal protective equipment for control of worker exposures.
| - Utilize critical thinking in the development, management, and evaluation of industrial hygiene/occupational health programs.
| - Communicate to labor, management, and the community, both verbally and in writing, the nature, risks, and remediation of workplace and environmental hazards.
| - Interpret and assure compliance with applicable government regulations and standards pertaining to occupational safety and health.
