| Mission: The mission of the Industrial Hygiene program is to prepare mid career health and safety professionals to anticipate, recognize, evaluate, and manage workplace exposure to chemical, biological, and physical stressors in the workplace and indoor environment. A secondary objective of the program is to prepare graduates to sit for the CIH certification exam administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. Description: MSPH in Industrial Hygiene provides graduates with the knowledge and skills to Anticipate, recognize and evaluate work place exposures and hazards, apply science and engineering principles to control work place hazards and develop and manage industrial hygiene programs. The program is designed to prepare graduates for the certification exam administered by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene. The CIH certification is the hallmark of professional achievement and competence within the field of industrial hygiene. The Tulane MSPH-IH degree program is fully accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of the American Board of Engineering and Technology (ASAC of ABET). Program Competencies:
- Use basic scientific and engineering principles to anticipate and identify potential hazards in the workplace (ENHS 6390, ENHS 6600, ENHS 6620, ENHS 6720, ENHS 7110, ENHS 7500, Practicum).
- Apply the methods and techniques of analytical chemistry and other measurement sciences to quantify the degree of hazard of identified occupational health stressors (BIOS 6030, ENHS 6720, ENHS 7500, Practicum).
- Interpret toxicology literature and health data and incorporate these into the management of occupational health hazards (EPID 6030, ENHS 6540, ENHS 6600, ENHS 7620, Practicum).
- Apply principles of engineering in the design of appropriate controls for workplace hazards, with emphasis on general and local exhaust ventilation (ENHS 6390, ENHS 6620, ENHS 7110, Practicum).
- Select, evaluate, and manage the use of appropriate types of personal protective equipment for control of worker exposures (ENHS 6390, ENHS 6570, ENHS 6620, ENHS 6720, Practicum).
- Utilize critical thinking in the development, management, and evaluation of industrial hygiene programs (ENHS 6570, ENHS 6720, ENHS 9990, Practicum).
- Communicate to labor, management, and the community, verbally and in writing, the nature, risks, and remediation of workplace and environmental hazards (ENHS 6570, ENHS 6590, ENHS 6600, ENHS 6720, ENHS 7620, Practicum).
- Interpret and assure compliance with applicable government regulations and standards pertaining to occupational safety and health (ENHS 6390, ENHS 6540, ENHS 6570, ENHS 6590, ENHS 6620, ENHS 6720, ENHS 7310, Practicum).

Graduation Requirements:
Students must earn a minimum of 45 hours of academic credit with a GPA of 3.0 or better. The credit hours consist of: School of Public Health Core requirements, 18 credits hours and IH program required courses 27 credits. The School of Public Health Industrial Hygiene Comprehensive Exam must be passed*. Students are required to attend a one-week, on-campus session to perform the laboratories in ENHS7500 Air Sampling & Analysis. Students with less than 3 years experience in industrial hygiene or closely related field are required to perform the Practicum. All students must complete the Culminating Experience through field or laboratory research. Course Requirements:
Culminating Experience (0 Credits)
The Culminating Experience is a formal, professional Public Health Analysis manuscript describing the student’s basic or applied research that will contribute to the scope of knowledge in the field of public health, address a specific or general problem within the field of industrial hygiene, and demonstrate the student’s mastery of the program competencies. The importance of the results in relation to public health/industrial hygiene is discussed and recommendations for future interventions and research are included. Students are required to present their work in an on line seminar format. The topic and scope of the written Culminating Experience document is done in consultation with the IH program faculty advisor. Practicum (0 credits) The Practicum is designed to demonstrate application of core public health knowledge in practice. Specific competencies for the Practicum may be found at this link: Practicum Requirement . Professionals working in an appropriate field of public health may be able to waive this requirement if they are able to meet certain conditions, which may be found here and practicum waiver form.
