| Mission: The mission of the Disaster Management Certificate program is to provide training for professionals involved in disaster preparedness or response. This is done by providing course work, projects, and reflection laboratories in various disaster scenarios. Description: The Disaster Management Certificate is designed to train and educate students in the development, execution and evaluation of disasters with respect to preparedness, detection, response, containment and recovery. The program provides skills in working within the management structure and operational models unique to disasters including; crises communication, population issues and psychosocial aspects of disasters. Program Competencies:
At the completion of the Disaster Management certificate, the graduate will be able to: - Apply scientific principles exposure, dose-response, distribution, detection and metabolism of toxicants (ENHS 6600; SPHL 6010).
- Apply public health, policy, practice and scientific principles to address the health threats resulting from natural and intentional disasters (ENHS 6910; ENHS 6920).
- Integrate environmental public health strategies in the development, execution, and evaluation of each core component of disaster management including: preparedness, detection, response, containment, and recovery (ENHS 6910).
- Implement population-based interventions to protect communities and particularly vulnerable populations, from natural and intentional disasters (ENHS 6930; ENHS 6430; ENHS 6950).
- Evaluate the capacity of public health systems to effectively and efficaciously respond to natural and intentional disasters (ENHS 6930; ENHS 6430).
- Integrate skills in environmental and hazardous materials management, emergency planning
and response, crisis communications, accident investigation, risk assessments, perception and communication (ENHS 6430).

Certificate Requirements:
To obtain the certificate, the student must successfully complete 21 hours of academic credit. The curriculum consists of 6 Disaster Management courses for 18 credit hours plus SPHL 6010 the Biological Basis of Disease. Graduate academic credit is awarded for all courses in which a grade of B or above is awarded. These credits can be transferred into the Disaster Management MPH program if the student meets the admissions standards and is accepted into the program at a later date. Course Requirements:

Admission Requirements - A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college with 20 or more semester hours in science, math or engineering.
- A preferred grade point average 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- Three or more years of experience in health and safety, occupational or environmental health and or disaster management or response documented by work history, resume.
- A strong base of computer skills including the ability to use the Internet, to manipulate and organize computer-based files and email, to use MS Office applications (intermediate proficiency preferred), and to implement technical instructions and guidance for the appropriate
