MPH in Disaster Management (Distance Learning)               

Mission: 

The mission of the Disaster Management program is to enhance the management skills of midcareer professionals in the planning, responding and evaluation of potential and actual disasters as it relates to public health. The skills acquired in the program can be leveraged for advancement into leadership positions within their organizations and industries.

Description: 

The MPH in Disaster Management is designed to train and educate students in the development, execution and evaluation of disasters with respect to preparedness, hazard detection, response, containment and recovery. The program provides skills in how best to work within the management structure and operational models that are unique to disasters.  Students receive training in: crises communication, population issues and psychosocial aspects of disasters as well as acquiring a firm foundation in the public health implications of disasters and disaster response.

Program Competencies:

At the completion of the MPH in Disaster Management the graduates will be able to:

  1. Apply scientific principles to prevent, detect and mitigate environmental public health problems and threats locally and globally (ENHS 6030; ENHS 6600; ENHS 7620).

  2. Conduct public health analyses and investigations for innovative solutions to environmental health issues (ENHS 6030; EPID 6030; BIOS 6030; SPHL 6030; ENHS 7000).

  3. Investigate and monitor environmental hazards resulting from exposures to hazardous substances in the environment (ENHS 7620; ENHS 6510; ENHS 6590).

  4. Apply public health science, policy, and practice principles to address the health threats resulting from natural and intentional disasters (ENHS 7750; ENHS 6910; ENHS 7910; ENHS 6920).

  5. Integrate environmental public health strategies in the development, execution, and evaluation of each core component of disaster management: preparedness, detection, response, containment, and recovery (ENHS 6910; ENHS 6940; ENHS 7910).

  6. Implement population-based interventions to protect communities, particularly vulnerable populations, from natural and intentional disasters (ENHS 6930; ENHS 6430; ENHS 6950; ENHS 7950).

  7. Evaluate the capacity of public health systems to effectively and efficaciously respond to natural and intentional disasters (ENHS 6930; ENHS 7750; ENHS 6430; ENHS 7910).

  8. Integrate skills in environmental and hazardous materials management, emergency planning and response, crisis communications, accident investigation, risk assessments, perception and communication (ENHS 6430; ENHS 6710; ENHS 7220).

  9. Demonstrate methods of systematically integrating health and safety programs into standard management systems used by organizations (ENHS 7230; ENHS 7240).

  10. Integrate the leadership roles involved in strategic planning, project management, management of multi-disciplinary teams, and regulatory affairs management (ENHS 7230; ENHS 7240).

  11. Demonstrate use of statistical methodology in the health and safety field (BIOS 6030; EPID 6030).


Graduation Requirements:

Students must earn a minimum of 42 hours of academic credit: of which School of Public Health core requirements make up 18 credit hours, DM program required courses make up 15 credit hours and DM elective courses make up 9 credit hours.  In addition to the academic credit hours students must complete a Culminating Experience and a Practicum.  In some instance the Practicum may be waived.

Disaster Management Elective Courses (9 credits)

May be taken from: Occupational Health and Safety Management, Occupational and Environmental Health or the Industrial Hygiene program courses.  The electives are selected with advisor consultation.




Culminating Experience (0 Credits)

Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine allows students to satisfy the requirements for a culminating experience by completing one of the following options.  Additional detail for Culminating Experience may be found at this link: Culminating Experience

1.     Public Health Analysis Manuscript

2.    Master’s Comprehensive Examination.

Practicum (0 credits)

The Practicum is designed to demonstrate application of core public health knowledge in practice.  Specific competencies for the Practicum may be found at this link: Practicum Requirement.  Professionals working in an appropriate field of public health may be able to waive this requirement if they are able to meet certain conditions, which may be found here and practicum waiver form.

Electives may be selected from the Industrial Hygiene, Disaster Management or Occupational Health and Safety Management program courses.

Admission Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university or college with 40 or more semester hours in science, math or engineering.

  • A preferred grade point average 3.0 on a 4.0 scale 

  • Three or more years of experience in health and safety, occupational or environmental health and or disaster management or response documented by work history (resume) and stated in letters of recommendation

  • Three letters of recommendations from individuals familiar with prior academic and/or professional performance

  • A strong base of computer skills including the ability to use the Internet, to manipulate and organize computer-based files and email, to use MS Office applications (intermediate  proficiency preferred), and to implement technical instructions and guidance for the appropriate
