Culminating Experience/Capstone Project

As a part of the MPH and MSPH degree requirements, all students must complete a capstone project or “culminating experience” in addition to their coursework.  This project is designed to promote the synthesis and integration of knowledge acquired through course work and other learning experiences.  The objective is to apply theory and principle in a project that approximates some aspect of professional practice.  Distance Learning masters students will be required to complete an Applied Research Report.  Students frequently select a project or issue that is related to their job.  While the results from the project may be used within the job, the project should be designed to fulfill the objectives of the capstone.

In recent years, the Council on Education in Public Health (CEPH), the main accrediting body of all schools and programs of public health, has mandated serious and substantive changes to the Capstone or Culminating Experience requirement.  The implementation of these changes in the Tulane curricula are currently in progress and more specific information will be forthcoming.  For additional information on compliance with new requirements pertaining to the Capstone, each student should consult with his or her advisor.  For the MSPH-IH program all discussions on this matter should be with Dr. Roy Rando; for the MPH-OEH and MPH-OHSM programs this should be initiated with Dr. Susie Allen
