HEALTH AHEAD/HEART SMART
Program for Health Education for
Elementary School Age Children (K-6)

A)  Classroom curriculum
B)  Cafeteria -- Nutrition
C)  Physical education
D)  Role models for Teachers and Parents

Health Ahead/ Heart Smart builds on more than two decade's research in creating an effective cardiovascular prevention and general health education for children. The program addresses general health of the entire school environment. The newly revised edition of the curriculum integrates national health education, science, and technology standards. It also incorporates school guidelines for nutrition, physical activity, and tobacco use prevention recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and, importantly, addresses social problems such as drugs, alcohol abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, dropping out of school, and violent behavior. The goal of the program is to give children's health and behavior (lifestyles) a boost that will last them a lifetime! Health Ahead/Heart Smart strongly believes a healthy child is a more effective student and, later in life, a more positive member of society.

There are five components to the Heart Smart program:
1.  General Health
2.  Nutrition
3.  Super Kids/Super Fit (Physical Education)
4.  Coping Skills
5.  It's Me (Self-Esteem, Attitudes and Values)

The curriculum incorporates “hands on” and many activities that successfully joins the science concerning predictive risk factors. It promotes the effective application of protective health behaviors with personal messages for teachers and parents. Its impact is measured by the ability of students participating in the curriculum to practice health protective behaviors while taking responsibility for their own health. Two lessons from each grade level are provided on the web page for preview. Links to the lessons are on the left side of this page. Also, check out a new page of health related links!
